Don't forget to secure your wireless so other people don't leech of it.
You would be surprised at the number of wireless networks there are out there unsecured.

Securing is easy and is explained on the installation disc, or use This Link

Hey DB,

I have the same wireless router. Having used and set up a few in my time I must admit I was impressed with the quality of the instructions etc that came with the linksys....

BUT!

I found that when I configured the router to use WPA2 encryption (using a hard cable to the router) and then put the wireless card in and worked through the setup CD, there is no place to put the WPA2 settings in with the linksys utility, only WEP settings.

I have spoken to linksys support on this matter. Unfortunately, the support technician appeared to know less than I did (for example she could not get her head around the fact that I had changed the router default IP address - saying it simply wasn't possible). In the end she just said that there was a bug in the Linksys utility and I am not so convinced she knew what she was talking about.

Also, my wireless card would drop the connection every five seconds. They didn't have a clue what was causing this. I played around with the windows wireless settings and appears to now work. Anyone else have this issue?

Oh, and Linksys apparently don't deal with 'support issues' - they are now 'product concerns'.

I haven't played around with wpa at all so can't be helpful there. No problems with wep when I did set it - I don't bother now. Not too surprised by the quality of technical support we are given these days (from all walks of life). Keeping costs down is more important than keeping customers.

I'm not really sure what you mean by using the setup CD after you configured the router for WPA2, since you connect using the webGUI there is no need to use the setup CD, that is only there to make installation really easy and with no flair so no WPA2 in there, aswell as no MAC filtering and so on.

You need to make sure that your WiFi card is primedto use WPA2 so you need to install a MS hotfix KB893357

security bug with wrt54g - reminder

This serves as a reminder or FYI.

Do a google on "wrt54g remote administration security problem bug".

Some firmware versions still allow remote administration web access even though the function is disabled.

The safest way is to port-forward 80 and 443 to an unknown host.

Thanks for that advice.

What I mean is, initially you configure the router. Therefore you have a cable from the PC to the router and use the web interface to set up the router. At this point you set up the encryption details.

Once the router is set up, you have to configure the wireless card. So, according to the linksys instructions, you plonk the CD that comes with the wireless card into the PC and follow the setup instructions.

This installs a Linksys utility which then allows you to set up a profile (with all the SSID details in etc) to connect to the wireless network. In this utility you can create multiple profiles (for different wireless networks?). But in this utility, there is no option to specify your WPA2 settings (ie the passkey) so you can never connect to the network.

Thanks for the heads up on that one!

I am no expert on port forwarding, but if I port forward port 80, will this stop me using it? I use port 80 as I use some UK proxies in order to be able to listen to BBC Radio Five Live using Realplayer.

If I don't do this, when I connect to Radio Five Live (I need my footie commentary!) it says that the broadcast is not licensed for my region (HK I guess).

If anyone has a simpler method for getting the BBC Five Live to work in HK I would be happy to hear it.

Hi guys

I followed the instructions that came with the router and have followed the instructions for securing the connection but i am now unable to connect with my laptop.

The connection does not appear in the wireless list at all

What do i need to do on my laptop so i can connect to wireless?
