Yes jay, you can do just that. My router serves my desktop by wire and my notebook and Atom by wireless.

check the firmware version

Check the firmware version number first before you buy if you want to use any open source firmware in the future.

Hey wing, babs has already admitted to being a 'thick person' so let's not get her looking at firmware just now.

Barbara,
I'm with PCCW (broadband internet) and have NOW (broadband tv) too. You will have a wire from your telephone wall socket running to a modem thingy. That will have a wire running to your NOW thingy. It will also have another wire running to your computer which I assume is a desktop one and not your new shiny Sony.
You need to place the Linksys router between your modem and your desktop. The router will come with an extra wire for this. So it will be desktop -> router -> modem -> wall socket. The documentation that comes with the router is simple to follow.
When all is switched on you will need to use the desktop to set the PCCW username and password into the router. Doing that will make life easier as then the router will perform the login each time you power it on. I leave mine on and power off the desktop. That way I can always use the internet from my notebook or pda even when the desktop is off.
capiche?
