Why are cars so cheap?

Looking through the classifieds here, I noticed that cars are ridiculously cheap compared to where I live in Canada - there is an Accord, BMW, Mazda Tribute, all for between $28K and $60K HKD

These same cars would cost over twice that price here..

Now I know that driving in HK is VERY expensive, with insurance, parking, gas, etc, etc, but is there anything *else* to these prices that I am not getting? Or are used cars just that worthless in HK?

Theres also the added cost of getting a new licence each year as that adds to the expense depending on the age of the car and engine size.

What Jimbo says .... plus the perception that most middle / upper class chinese would prefer to buy new .. and not someone elses used "junk".

Wow! I didn't know about these fees in HK. No wonder so many people use public transport.

What are all these fees people are seeing?

Of course you pay to transfer your ownership and for drivers licence. But on top of that the only fees you have are:

1)Car itself
2)Repairs (6-12 months for most cars)
3) Vehicle Licence fee $5,794 for one year (most regular everyday cars)
4) Insurance
5)Gas $13 a litre for regular. OUCH
6)Parking Free-$3000 per month (Each place you park)

It's not THAT bad. I make less than 90% of this board I bet and I have found it possible to own a car....
