does anyone have any ideas why apartments, especially 'new' ones are not fitted with them as standard as they are in the UK, US etc?? Especially when as already pointed out by previous posts, the chances of getting out of a HK high rise apartment in the event of a fire probably isn't that great!

In a place where you can give some a panic attack by coughing near them, it seems that perhaps paranoia supersedes basic safety precautions.

Yes B&Q has them. I brought them my with me from Canada but don't use them here as they are going off all the time.

You see its perfectly OK to start big paper-burning bonfires in the "fire-escape" stairwells of your highrise apt. - as long as you use a metal bucket. Where they think the smoke and toxins go from the glossy papers , I don't know.

Amazing.

There is a small fire safety store on Kau U Fong St, just below Gough St in Central.

great question, i was going to ask this myself. I have also wonderered why its not mandatory to have them installed as they are in Canada.

Claire you got a number or an address for Safety Fire Equipment in Wanchai?

As you seem unable to check the Yellow Pages , the information (including a helpful map) can be found at its website: fire.com.hk

I think there are several reasons why smoke/CO2 alarms are not a legal requirement in domestic premises. One would be enforcement, the government has enough trouble trying to owners (particularly of really old buildings) to get up to the current safety codes. Developers don't want any other requirements; they managed to get the one about having windows in bathrooms ditched. And Hong Kong is also a fairly free city; it hasn't reached the nanny state status of the UK, for example.

1. I gave you the name and area! Anyway I would have to look it up which I don't want to do because I'm a lazy biatch.

2. So, if you do buy one, it will sit in its box for six months waiting for you to install it, heh? And don't get me started on forgetting to buy/change the batteries...
