Getting a residence-permit in Sweden is hard. Sweden is a rich scandinavian country with a huge public sector, free healthcare, free education etc. etc. and it's a very popular destination.

To qualify for a residence-permit, you must generally have close relatives in Sweden, i.e. parents, brothers/sisters etc. Another option is if you are married to a Swedish citizen. It's stated on the governments homepage that it's possible to get a permit if you have a relationship with a swedish citizen, even though you're not married. I've never heard about anyone going with this option, and I think it's quite difficult. You would have to attend an interview and what the embassy would like to know about you would definitely have to do with how serious this relationship is, how long it's been going on, how frequently you're meeting eachother etc....other questions will be if you can speak swedish, if you have a university degree, your financial situation, your profession etc. Everything to minimize the risk of taking someone in who then has to claim unemployment benefits, recieve subsidies and grants and etc. something Sweden has alot alot alot of.

Give it a try!

Hey Raz

I have read everything online about getting the resident permit, either the official websites or the forums. SOme people said if someone in Sweden really wants you to be there with him/her,then its not hard to get the permit. All I want is to live with my boyfriend there, tho I am not gonna take anything for granted in Sweden besides education.
Its pretty frustrating you know...I'll still give it a try then i wouldn't regret!

Of course you should give it a try! But it's a tough world u know...cause, if someone doesn't work and pay taxes in a country, they are an expense...so even if you just want to study there the swedish taxpayers has to pay for your education, and if you get sick they have to pay for your treatment etc. etc.

What you need is obviously a boyfriend who really fights for you getting the permit, and you also really have to convince the government regarding your intentions....everything from taking classes in swedish (so your chances of getting a job after studies increases) to work part-time during your studies... Read more about it here: http://www.sweden.se/templates/cs/Article____4937.aspx

Why don't you just apply as an international student to one of the universities in Sweden, if successful, you will be granted a residence permit during your studies...
