| Well we homeschool so that helps the school budget My husband is there looking at al these properties, I've been staying up all night several night so he can email me pictures from his phone while he's looking at them. I don't know how one could do this without technology. He has a pretty good idea of what we need and I was there in Sept looking at properties too. I was really surprised to discover what 2200 sq feet lookslike in HK. Stillit's only a 2 yr contract so I am trying to think "Big hotel room" not TINY apt. |

However before you sweat too much, there is some type of "partnering scheme" sorry but I dont know the details. Perhaps somebody else will chime in with more data. But it is certain you will have to pay the partnering school admin charges or something similar. |

| I don't think three month's rent as a deposit is unreasonable. An expat renting in Hong Kong is different from an American renting in America. In the U.S., a landlord can run a credit report, check references, etc. -- things needed to evaluate your creditworthiness. In Hong Kong, a landlord does not have access to these things. |

| I can see your point That's why I was wondering if there were mitigating circumstances that would convince a landlord to drop that down a bit. Like our employer is atually taking out the lease and paying the rent out of our salary etc. But that said His employer agreed to pay the deposit so no worries. |

| Well..... [quote=JAherbert]FYI: Home schooling is not legal here. However before you sweat too much, there is some type of "partnering scheme" sorry but I dont know the details. Homeschooling is legal in HK if you meet their requirements, which we do. I don't know if I would use the word "scheme". There are alot of expats who homeschool because of waiting lists at international schools. Or because, in our case we feel that being free to travel the world while getting a great education is more valuable for our childrens worldview than being stuck in a classroom for hours each day, getting what education a bureaucrat decides is important. So if their are partnerships out there that make that possible when the law is too rigid than YAY! Last edited by jadick; 17-02-2006 at 10:23 AM. |

| how does homeshooling work out in long run? i mean do companies look and say..."wow, im impressed you have been homeschooled" or is it more like "wow...NEXT" i dont mean disrespect, but it seems that there is so much importance on education, where its from, and the degree and the type of classes, and the narrow or broadness of the learning. it seems home schooled kids can only get jobs in midwest USA or something along bible belt. again...i am not making fun or being mean, i just really never met any homeschool people...and am curious how the long term effects are |

| >> i mean do companies look and say..."wow, im impressed you have been homeschooled" or is it more like "wow...NEXT" If you're interviewing with a company that is going to bother with home schooling, you're interviewing for the wrong job and the wrong company. Any position that requires academic qualifications will need a university degree... >> it seems home schooled kids can only get jobs in midwest USA or something along bible belt. Here's a non bible belt story for you .. http://www.boston.com/news/globe/mag...lhouse_rocked/ (Sometimes I wonder why I get caught up with these wind up attempts)

| No offense taken these are legit questions! sorry this is long. The fact is my husband was homeschooled and at 33 He is a VP for IT Systems Developement an International Garment labeling company in HK. The fact is that the real important thing as far as jobs are concerned is where you study in your University years. My oldest is 13 and we are just starting into some more heavy duty college prep schooling, she is doing Algebra 1 and we are taking the individual time to make sure that she really gets the concepts before we move on and as a result her standardized test scores are off the chart. My husband is quick to point out that we are comparing against only US schools on those tests but I can't help but think that the individual attenttion I am able to give to my kids is going to be an asset in their college years. Think about it I have a 5:1 student teacher ratio. My kindergartners are learning ancient history and are studying cantonese. I had my kids in public school and I pulled them because I was teaching them everything they were supposed to be learning in class in the evening. |
