Hey darkangel, what does a NET actually do? Are you just like any mainstream English teacher or are you like an assistant to the local English teachers? Plus, your workload isn't comaprable to do that of a mainstream local teacher is it?

cheers

Well Ksrnf,

U r not an assistant to the local teachers. It all depends on the school. If u have experience in teaching then u guide the local teachers on how to improve the teachin quality n how to get the students to learn some english thru games n activities.

If u dont ve experience like me then u can ask the local teachs to guide u a bit like wat they wud like u to teach their students n so on. Like wat i do i usually rely on the net for games n stuff n i do that in class of course related to the topic being taught. As i teach KS2 i need to come up with interesting stuff which is hard... But if u teach KS1 then it shud be a bit easy. So it all depens on the school.

There is no workload at all. Actually the local teachers n u work together in the classroom. U teach n they maintain discipline.

As long as u show them that u r working its fine. It all comes down to how u r gonna show them the way of getting their students to use english in their life instead of chinese all d time.

pm if u need more detailed info.

wow, that's really interesting. So i take it it's much better to be a NET than a mainstream local English teacher!

by the way darkangel, do you have a TESOL or a CELTYL? When i did my CELTYL at the British council, they taught us a lot of different games and activities regarding English teaching.

One more thing, do you get a choice of which school you're posted too? and what is ks1 and ks2?

cheers

ok KS1 is primay 1-3 and KS2 is Primary 4-6...

well i did a tesol course before i joined work.

Yeah d games n activites u learnt can be put to use in schools if u accept.
WEll after u have had the interview with the schools, they send u a mail of whether u wanna accept or decline so its upto u. if u like the school then u canaccept or if u don wanna go there u can decline it.

No hard n fast rule.

Hi dark angel
If I want to apply for September teaching positions, when is the usual cut off date for applying? I'll only be starting the TESOL mid April and finishing it late May.
Cheers.

Keep an eye out in the SCMP classifieds - there were a few ads this weekend for govt NET jobs. Some schools are continuously advertising so no harm in looking sooner
Good luck!

Thanks for the advice.
Any chance you know of a 'good' CV format to follow for teaching posts? I have a CV already, tailored to design posts of course, but apart from the obvious inclusions of personal details/experience/qualifications, I understand (well, from a few that I've seen on the web) that teacher CV's need to include such things as nationality and passport number? Is there a standard format?

Just wondering, is having a tesol/tefl qualification enough to apply for the NET jobs, or do you need like a proper teaching degree?

Apparently any Degree and 'just' a TESOL or equivalent is enough to apply for a NET job, due to demand...Saying that, I've just received my TESOL Starter Pack and the course looks very demanding - especially not having studied English since my O-Levels (i.e. a long time ago)!
