I won't be in HK until end of August, if I get the job, but I would be there for sure "liming" on 6th, if I was for sure . I tried emailing you directly at the address you provided to ask about safe, but inexpensive neighbourhoods to live in near Kowloon (STAR TV), but it would not accept my email. Please let me know so I can look up the areas in advance. Thanks.

I'm even thrilled to see that some of you have posted things throughout the past few years, which gives me hope that people of color can last more than 6 months in HK!

Though I've briefly read the forum about hair, did anyone actually find a hair salon that can handle African-American textured hair? My hair seems to be my biggest worry right now. I don't use any appliances because of the type of texture (perm) I have. Thankfully, I don't have to worry about that. So, any reccomendations?

Can't wait to meet all of you soon!
Hello charliahb (and everyone else)!
Welcome to HK. I have lived in HK for the past two years (and just recently agreed to stay for another!!!) You'll soon discover that Hong Kong is great city to live in and will probably extend your trip (as I have done). I still get the stares but that's only because they are trying to figure out exactly WHAT I am! It would seem as though African American's are very different/new because of the strong Indian and African culture base in HK. So, I've gotten over the stares and have actually embraced it. A smile goes a long way and usually surprises the locals. I don't feel any direct discrimination... I believe that you can tell the difference between someone being generally curious vs disrespectful. I HAVE NOT ever felt disrespectful....then again, I don't speak Cantonese so who knows .

In regards to hair, I have been going to Keith @ Hipp Fish (Thanks for the heads up Colette) for the past 6 months. He does great work on African American hair but it is not cheap ($350HKD for wash + flat iron ; $1500HKD for relaxer + cut). You will soon realize...cost is not a big deal after you've worn a "nappy" ponytail for 18 months! ;-)

I work in Shenzhen but live in HK but am always ready to hang out on the weekends. Also, I just had a baby and am ready to get out more. So anyone that's interested in drinks/clubs on the weekends, please give me a shout.

Nycole

Nycole-
I can't tell you how much I appreciate being able to hear of a hair-dresser who is able to handle my hair! Now I can breathe a bit easier.

I will be arriving mid-August, so I will keep in contact with you so we can hopefully meet on a weekend! Congratulations on the arrival of your new baby, too.

I'm sure I'll post more questions as the arise, if you are willing to share some guidance.

Take Care,
Charliah

Does Keith do kids hair?

My husband and I will most likely be moving to HK from the US in August. We are both white but 3 of our 5 kids are bi-racial (African-American and white). Each child's hair is different. Does Keith do kids hair do you know? Any other suggestions for AA kids?

Also, if you guys know of anyone else with AA or bi-racial kids, I would love to find them when we get there.

Thanks. Great thread.

Hip Fish

I think he does. But if you do not want to get it done all the time. You can check out this website.
www.growafrohairlong.com I have just taken a few of the suggestions from this website. I can cope with the lack of products, the expense of a hair dresser and, time spent on hair. It is worth a peek. My hair is has grown from a broken shoulder length to waist length from this. Keith refuses to cut it because he thinks it is pretty. But, I may cut it soon. Because it is now too long to do anything with.

Smile So... where do you think I should go???

Hey there,

I have recently moved to HK and this is the first time I have posted anything on a website! I am so glad to know there really are other AA living here because I have yet to see anyone who looks like me. I've been invited to attend a BBQ at the America's Club in Stanley (or close to it) tomorrow evening. I've been there before, but I'm looking for some place a little more "down to earth" where I can hang out, and at least see a couple of folks who look like me. I'm thinking I may get up the couarge to venture out on Saturday. Any suggests of places I should check out? I live on the Kowloon Island side, but will be happy to take a taxi over to the other side... I like R&B music, some Hip Hop and listen to Jazz from time to time.

4 th and Saturdays

There is Makumba the African club. Good Music, Nice mixed drinks, African tapas. And yes, quite a few black people. We are going to go to a dinner at Union Grill. You can join us. We will be the only black people, I think.
