What not to forget - Arrival?

Hi All,

Well, I will arrive in HK from the UK on Monday. I have a few months in a serviced apartment before my belongings turn up on the ship, so what do I definitely need to remember to bring?

So far I have:
Clothes
Toothbrush
Ipod (and charger)
Passport

Thanks for your help
Meerkat.

decent quality bath and face towels as the ones over here are not too good quality wise.

Decent teabags!

Bring anything that is an absolute favourite or even a little bit unusual - chances are you can get it in HK but when you first arrive things can be a bit confusing and overwhelming and hard to find. Bring a few personal items like photos or favourite nic nacs - serviced apartments are nice but you need to make them feel like home and they are a bit too clinical for that, also one you find an apartment you will be able to find lots of furniture but again making it feel like home is a bit harder.

Meerkat!

Welcome to HK You can pretty much get anything here, so don't bring too much, otherwise it's getting too heavy. I can think of 2 things:

- Laptop (if you have that with you), so you can get in touch with family and friends anytime
- Mobile (You can use your mobile here, and you need that in a new place)

Bon Voyage!

Cheers, Blom

... what not to forget...

Well I am here now and ensconced in a service apartment... My baggage was 7 kilos over the allowance but somehow got away with it....

Thanks for the tips... I will update this thread with things I wish I had brought as they come to me..

The first one is: the address of the apartment written in Chinese!! The journey could have been a lot worse if I hadn't already been to the apartment.

Baron is an unknown quantity at this point.
The one thing everyone needs to take along, is a good music collection. If you dont, you will find yourself buying them again...or downloading

Laughing_Monkey will become famous soon enough
One thing i wish i'd thought of was some utility bills/ offical letters with my old UK address (or my parents or anyones for that matter) that i could use to open up a bank account etc. I was just lucky that i had copies of loads of correspondence from HKU with my UK and subsequently HK address on.

Also, in retrospect, i wish id brought the knowledge of some cantonese with me.....

A file of legal documents is something you migth want. Bank account, utility bill, birth certificate, marriage, any visa or passport papers. (Always make a copy of the front page of your passport). These are documents that may become necessary for travel in Asia or to prove something in HK.

A couple of months on and my furniture has arrived from the UK. One thing to remember if your sofa has casters, get some of those little pads from IKEA that I think are meant as carpet protectors, to stop your sofa gliding around on the hard floors. They just don't sell them here.

I am going to have to buy some feet to replace the casters. ... bit of a comedy moment every time I site down.
