Not been myself but planning to this year. Why not pick up a copy of the Lux guide to Bangkok - most bookshops in HK will have it (e.g. Dymmocks). If you're not familiar with the Lux guides they're tiny (just a fold out bit of cardboard), updated every 6 months and list most of the cool places to eat, drink, party, shop, visit etc.

You should visit the massive 'mal' store called Mah Boon Krong (MBK) - its a worthwhile experience!

Also there are a few markets that are worth a trip, as is the river - its nice for a meal at night.

Otherwise check the LP. There are quite a lot of places that you can do in a day from there as well including the Bridge from the River Kwai and the old royal city north of their. Cant remember the name but itll be in all the guide books, well worth a visit if you get the chance...

Lots of authentic things to do:

1. visit the Golden Palace
2. take a ride on a boat on the Choappaya River
3. Have a wicked foot massage
4. visit the loads of temples (wats) - always interesting
5. wort seeing the floating market though its a long day and a very ealry start.

I would make shopping a lower priority but the silk goods are well worth it.

Go for a wild ride in the city on one of the tuk-tuks!! There's nothing like speeding on a highway in a tuk-tuk. Don't forget to bargain with them for the price to your destination though! You will realize that the prices will go up in the night as people are making their way back to their accomodation from the night markets. However, they're a cheaper form of transportation than cabs, where you also need to negotiate prices come evening.

It could be interesting to check out a transvestite club. The girls usually give it a pass but my guy friends have told me it's worthwhile to check out.
