Dependency Visa - Entry Requirement

Hi there.

I have had a look at the HK Immigration guidelines, but still have a question in relation to my Dependency Visa. I'm not sure if anyone can help me here, but best to ask.

I'm coming to HK on 18 Feb to join my wife who is on an Employment Visa. At this stage, I do not have a return ticket to the UK. I'm hesitant to book one at the moment, due to uncertainty on our plans beyond our three months visa. HK immigration guidelines states:

- "You are required to be in possession of adequate re-entry facilities to your place of residence" (visa).

- "An applicant....vaild travel documents with adequate returnability to his/her country of residence or citizenship" (D939 (8/2005))

- "You must present the visa/entry permit together with your passport or travel documents to the immigration officer upon your arrival in Hong Kong" (ID(E)937).

I have adeqaute facilities (finances) to purchase a ticket to return to the UK, and can provide evidence of this on arrival to Hong Kong (bank statements). My interpretation of the law is that as long as I can prove I have adequate funds to return to the UK, and a valid dependency visa, I will be approved entry into Hong Kong???

Has anyone ever been in this situation before? Would it be safer to buy an open-ended one-way back to London (I already have a one way to HK).

Any comments are appreciated.

Kind regards.

Mat.

If she is only on a 3 month Employment Visa then it is most likely a fixed contract "Entertainer's" visa. In which case I don't think the spouse is entitled to a Dependent's Visa. But if you hold a UK passport then you may enter and stay for up to 6 months as a tourist anyway.

With a UK Passport there is a vanishly small chance that you will be asked to show a return ticket.

Thanks for your replies.

Just to clarify.

We both have been issued with visa's. My wife's employment visa is for three months (so is my dependency visa) - this is to reflect the duration of contract my wife has signed the organisation. We are both on Australian passports.

Any other advice would be great.

Cheers.

On an Australian Passport you can enter for 3 months as a tourist anyway, and as with a UK passport the chance of being asked for a return ticket is vanishingly small. Be aware that a Dependent's Visa does not allow you to undertake any work in HK, including voluntary work (which would, I think, include proselytizing if that is why your wife is here).

Thanks PDLM. I'll run the gauntlet on this one.
