Cycling Clubs

Hey All,

I have searched high and low, but can't seem to find much in the way of cycling clubs with websites...

Does anyone know of any clubs with informal meets? looking mostly for road riding, maybe a bit of MTB, but not too keen on downhill (I'm getting old, my bones are taking longer to mend than they used to ).

I have looked up the HK triathlon club (looks good, bit out of my league as yet), HKMTB club (mostly serious off road, from what I can see, but correct me if I am wrong).. and in desperation tried looking for Critical Mass rides. Seems to be a small gathering there, but possibly not that regular...

Anyone know of any riding groups? Gotta get rid of my "30plus" blubber... i heard a quote once, which i think is 100% correct, "wash-board abs are wasted on teens", they don't know how good they are till they lose them and cant get them back, eg when they cross the 30yr mark

Most of the cycling in HK is limited to certain offroad trails or you're pushed onto the roads which are less safe than downhill runs!
There is a website for the HK Mountain Biking Association at www.hkmba.org which, although isn't updated too regularly, shows some of the popular trails. If you want a good day out trip the ride from Mui Wo along the coast is good. it's offroad but can be done on bikes rented from Friendly bike shop behind MacDonalds at the pier- they'll also guide you to the trailhead. There is also a good ride along the top of DB as well as several on Lamma. You could also try the Flying Ball website at www.flyingball.com.
Don't be such a sissy- get on a bike and do it!

hey lamma,
thanks for your post. i checked the HKMBA site before, that was the HKMTB thing i was talking about...

re being a sissy... hey, i ride. i just want to ride in groups. used to do group rides back home, head for 60km ride, stop at a cafe/bakery, refuel, 60km back. not much fun doing that solo.. in saying that, i haven't done much riding in HK.

also, re MTB trails, this would mean i need to get a hardtail bike something i'm not too keen on cos of the weight trade off on the road, and i dont have the room for 2 bikes... so a cross bike it is.. jack of all trades, ace of nothing.

had also seen flyingball... hoping for more suggestions, keep 'em coming...

Alright, alright, I guess I should have used one of these smiley things next to the sissy comment- or

There are loads of links on the Flying Ball site to all sorts of clubs- otherwise go there on a Saturday and speak to the English guy who works there part time selling road bikes.

Where is the front wheel on the last picture? Why buy a 'strong' bike with front forks like that? Gimmick and waste. Not the type of Hummer I like anyway

hey dropded - i just moved to HK a couple months ago - and brought my road bike only to be disappointed that I might never get to take it out of the box! (I AM a sissy riding on these Hong Kong roads) but keen on trying to get out there somewhere. I too am not into mountainbiking and hardly have enough room for my current bike.

Given my fear of having a double decker tailing me while I am riding - my question is how do you get your bike from say the 'urban' zones over to somewhere where the riding is a bit better? I have heard of some riding on off the island - but wonder how to get my bike there?

If you have some ideas, find out any more or are interested in trying to get out there sometime and would like some company - let me know!

That thing's a POS- if it was a dog you'd shoot it.. Quit posting it in every thread that has the word 'bike' in it.

Move to NT

i live in NT, and the traffic isn't too bad at all. I only got a cheapy MTB a few weeks back, just to "test the waters" on road and soon on a few trails. Just did a ride up route twisk, awesome climb, even more awesome coming down.

some people hire vans to transport their bikes, or take off the wheels and get a cab. another option is to get a full-sized folder, eg dahon matrix/cadenza. you can cover these in a fabric bag once folded, and no-one can say they are a bike , so technically you can take it on the train. the big problem with these bikes is the price is high and the specs are mediocre. another option is the dahon allegro (i think that is the name), but it's a pull apart bike, more than a folder, and it costs $15k but you get a lot of bike for that price (ultegra or dura-ace groupset on a light steel frame).

as you already have your roadie here, probably best to try getting a cab/van.

will send you a PM when i get back into shape, MB we can go for a spin.
