Hi to all cyclists out there,

I live in Tai Po and regularly go running on the path that runs along Tolo Harbour between Shatin, Tai Po and Tai Mei Tuk. I would not recommend that you go cycling along here on a Sunday unless you have a death wish! I saw more bike accidents (admittedly minor) last Sunday than I have seen car accidents in 2 years in Hong Kong.

Most of the people who ride along here, with the exception of the ones who are obviously serious cyclists, have no idea how to ride a bike. They can't syeer in a straight line, they have no idea which side of the path to ride on, they don't know how to use the gears or, in some cases, the brakes. The accidents I saw were divided between people running into each other, at low speed and because of incompetant steering, and people falling off or riding into the curb all by themselves, again at low speeds and due to incompetant steering.

Luckily most cyclists keep to the bike path so it is possible to run along the footpath, but it's pretty scary to watch. The traffic is less on a Saturday or first thing on Sunday morning (it starts to get heavy around 11:00). As for public holidays - forget it!

Sorry if this sounds negative, but if you want to have a pleasant bike ride on a Sunday, this is really not the place.

Nothing is pleasant on Sundays.. Even finding a seat in McDonalds is a nightmare not to mention a bench in a park.

Not being able to get a seat at McDonalds is merely inconvenient. Riding a bike around Tai Mei Tuk is downright dangerous!
By the way, the path between Tai Po and Shatin is somewhat improved and is now quite wide and reasonably pleasant, on Sunday mornings at least.

There is a list of tracks on the www.hkmba.org website (Hong Kong Mountain Biking Association). I think they organise some events too.
