I've been to the wan chai compauter centre - I saw a couple of shops but they didnt seem to be that cheap unless the laptops were seriously old.

Does around 4K seem like a good deal for a pentium 3 laptop?

I saw a few display models for clearance sell around 4-5K at fortress North point. Personaly i believe display pieces are no worse than second hand..

Yap... Saw it two day before.. Forgot the building name (probably Healthy Gardens) but its between Helthy Street West and Island place on King's road.. There is a post office next to Fortress..

Just to update...
the 4k and 5k models are sold at that fortress!!
the least priced one i saw yesterday evening over there was for 5499$ i think...
one person picked up 2 laptops of acer priced at 4599 and 4999...

i think by adding a little bit more u can get a new laptop.

Try the New Golden Computer Arcade, it's a block north of the original Golden. The whole place specializes in used computer goods. Also 298 Computer Zone in Wan Chai has more used laptop stores than Wan Chai CC, Mongkok CC and Golden proper.

That said, if you buget is bigger than $6000 and you're not looking for something exotic like ultralight subnotebooks or tablet PCs, you can probably find one new. Remember, haggle!
