Smile Moving From India to HK

Hey Guys

I am completely new to HK and this site is real cool and full of information.

Here what i want , I am working in IT Development , and planning to move to HK in next couple of month with my wife and 1 yr. old kid . I have offer of 30K . Will this be enough for comfortable life in HK ?, also with this offer what can be the Saving Potential ?

If you can provide information in following terms that will be great

1. House Rent (2 Bedroom , @700 sq.feet)
2. Food (We might go in restaurant once in week)
3. Electric / gas / Water/ Broadband (My Wife will be at home so this may increase)
4. Travel Expenses

Also any other information / experience which you feel will help me for moving

bye

Hi ... Im from India too (Bombay) and moved to HK a year back. Am in the banking industry.

1. House Rent (2 Bedroom , @700 sq.feet)

Depends where you stay. In you want to stay in the city the rent could be about 15K. Kowloon side will be cheaper - around 10K.

2. Food (We might go in restaurant once in week)

Groceries are not very expensive. Eating out however is. A meal for 2 would cost around HKD 250.

3. Electric / gas / Water/ Broadband (My Wife will be at home so this may increase)

Electricity - $250 - 300 per month. Could be more if ur wife will be at home the entire day as you will need an Air con in summers.

Gas - Not sure since I dont cook to much. $ 100.

Water - $20

Broadband and cable TV combined should be around $350.

4. Travel Expenses

Not sure what you mean by travel. A flight back to India costs around $4700.

Let me know if you need more info

Don't forget Education. If you decide to enrol your child in activities or playgroups, budget another $1500-$2500/mth.

I'd say that

1. rent - 12K ----- Yes can be OK
2.food - 1K ----- I'd budget a bit more for 3 ppl + meal outside: 2/3 K
3.Utility - 1.5 K ----- Yes can be OK
4. Transport - 1k ----- if you live not too far from your office should be OK
5. Kids - 2 K as Rani said

Total = 19 to 20 K

So I would more plan on saving 10.000 HKD/month. That said I guess you can find a cheaper flat around 10K instead of 12 in order to save a bit more.

Discovery Bay is cheaper and only 20 minutes by ferry to CBD. Rents around $6000-$7000 for a 2 bedroom flat. Travel cost around $1100.
Tax in HK a maximum of 15-16%

For a salary of 30K I would not suggest Discovery bay. Travel expenses are pretty high & mind you ferries will change for your 1 year old kids as well so just a return trip with fly to central would cost you around 150 HKD. Many IT guys on short term contract put up in Tsing Yi. A decent 2 BR flat (about 800 sq ft) would cost you around 8-8.5K. Make sure you select one with good club house facilities especially as you state your patner will at home with your kid. Grand Horizon in Tsing Yi a good place which I would suggest.
If you are looking for something different the you could try Park Island. Its a green island. They have 24 hours bus/ferry services to Central/Tsuen wan/Tsing YI MTR/Kwai Fong MTR.
The 2 club houses are definitely one of the best in HK. A 2BR flat would cost you around 8/9K while a 3BR would cost you 10-13K. These sites could be useful.
