Must have been 5 years but yesterday I once more made my way to the wilds of south eastern honkers to the land of Shek O. A good hour away from Central [#2 to Shau Kei Wan, and #9 to Shek O]

On this thread I will only concentrate on the food.

The Shek O Chinese And Thailand Seafood Restaurant was but one of many packed joints all of which seem to have more then half the seating 'al fresco' Our table of 2 managed to polish off Thai shrimp fried rice, Chicken satay, Vegetarian Sping Rolls and Fried Tofu in a spicy garlic sauce for the princely sum of $248 which included 10% s.c. and 3 pints of beer AND a doggie bag.

Defintely marked down for a quick repeat visit

ooops- you're right, Shri, make that Chiu Chau ... there's a choy dish with a ground pork topping that is just great. Had it at the Chiu Chau restaurant at the Lippo centre.

Not really a fan of Cantonese food or Chinese food in general, although I can never get enough Peking Duck.

Pretty much the only time I eat Cantonese food is during the once a month dinners with my wife's family .

Although I like some Cantonese food, it's never my first choice, with Greek, Indian, Mexican, Italian, Korean US and British food all coming ahead.

I detest Chinese food - any style. And I'm from the U.S. I don't even like American Style Chinese food. Why do these people eat chicken feet? Unbelievable.

hek, that's not surprise, "American style chinese food" is just that: Americanized. It's not Chinese food. If your experience is limited to "those people" eating chicken feet, you may want to get out more and find another restaurant perhaps.

Do many of the hawker stalls still exist out there in the streets.

The food in HK is much better in quality, preparation etc than the shitty takeaways and restuarants you get back in the UK.

Sure they do, they're part of the local landscape. Fishballs, chicken-wing-on-a-stick,, corn-in-a-cup, satay's, cheung fun, etc... I'm not too much of a fan though but to each their own.

The chinese food in Uk is way overpriced - what's a bowl of noodles at Waggamama go for these days? It's <2GBP here!

I wouldn't touch Chinese food with a ten foot pole. NASTY! Italian, Mexican and American are the top 3 for me. Unfortunately, no one in Hong Kong can make Mexican food properly.

No need to answer that. To be here does not necessarily have to do with liking local food.

BTW, back on the subject of food, wonder why often enough the Chinese in the various Chinatowns of Greater Toronto and Vancouver turns out to be better than HK's, (and cheaper at times). Even Cantonese and Dim Sum. Maybe because the ducks and geese are fed better and the veggies healthier? Did the best local chefs emigrate in the 90s? Yet to find a decent hot & sour soup there though - everyone seems to have learned the recipe from the same book. (None of the above applies to the N. American style Chinese (takeaway anyone?) or the Ho Lee Chows and Manchu Woks and other similar appalling stuff).
