This is a lively discussion! Personally I like alot of Cantonese food in HK, although some of it can be bland. But then, I like congee alot too. Has anyone ever had Shanghainese Dim Sum? It is wonderful. Try Green Willow Village Restaurant in World Trade Centre, Causeway Bay. I haven't tried Mexican in HK, and wonder how it would fare after LA. But I do love all foods, so am never bored in HK. No wonder I look forward to my permanent return in December ...

Cheung Chau, Shanghainese, Cantonese in that order...haven't had Schezuan yet.

Otherwise, love Italian, French, Russian, German of the European cuisines, and Thai and Japanese of the Asian. Where does Indian fit? Love the range.

What about a dinner instead of just drinks???

JJ : I think you're reffering to Chiu Chau. The food on Cheung Chau's pretty decent .. but not a in a class by itself.

hey, I heard froma friend that vegetables cooked in HK is especially oily compared to those in Singapore. Any suggestions where to get oil-less veggies.

ALso any suggestions for a nice romantic dinner at a reasonable price and where to find a good pub- soccer showing type.

As a Lammarite, I certainly would suggest Lamma Island for a romantic dinner. Table for two by one of the Sea-side seafood restaurant, and then a few pints to go with the Soccer games. HK is like anywhere else, you have to know where to go and pay for quality. Cantonese food is outstanding and it can also be crap. (try some of the crap food you get in the UK..is that british food?)

You should all toddle off to Modern China rest. at Olympic shopping centre....but you wont find egg rolls.

I will any day take the Chinese buffets of the US over the Cantonese food in Hong Kong. I do miss them! I have searched in vain for similar buffets in Hong Kong Any suggestions?

Can someone suggest some good and inexpensive places for Beijing or Shanghai style food? Red Pepper for Sichuan is quite good.

For me, Chinese ranks third after Thai and Indian.

About Dimsum's query on the small husband-wife Sichuan restaurants - there are two in the area you're talking about.

One is Mum Chau's . 5B Winner Building, 37 D'aguilar street. In the nondescript building next to Al's Diner on D'aguilar street in Lan Kwai Fong. It's a private kitchen tucked away on the 5th floor. You can have a 13 course meal for around $180 per person but you really need to go in a big group to do the place justice. The food is sensational. This is not the mild Canto-Sichuan nonsense, but real red-hot stuff. Keep the Fire Service phine # handy just in case.

Call 25220338 to reserve but since this is a Private Kitchen don't be surprised if they decline a reservation or even deny the existence of the restaurant. Ideally get a Cantonese speaker to do the deal on the phone.

The other is Yellow Door somewhere near Dublin Jack on Cochrane street. I'm told it's very good but haven't been there yet and don't know the phone number
