Just got back after holidays and internet seems really slow. Does anyone know what the Mbps speed should be. It seems to be fluctuating wildly event though the strengh is good.

Reboot your ADSL modem, router and pc if you have not done already. Contact your ISP and ask them to perform a line test.

The best way to test speed is with something that is relatively processor nonintensive, such as FTP. Web browsers download dozens of files for just one page and the parsing and placing of those can often skewer what it says is your download speed. Try downloading a monster file from an FTP site (preferablly using an FTP client instead of just a browser window) and then do the math (remember the 8:1 ration on mb to mbps).

Even then, you won't get a perfect condition as someone, somewhere, might also be on the same server or router that you are somewhere in the chain. If the problems continue frequently, I'd have to ask how old is your modem and have you dropped it lately???
