Or you could get a really good flat with roof, balcony etc, 700sqft if you're lucky, on Lamma island. 25 minutes on the ferry to Central, good atmosphere/social life, fresh air, greenery, beaches.

Just a little note, remember to take the transportation time and fee into account when you find a place to stay, as those places suggested is a bit "remote"

try lam tin or tseun wan or shatin

hey I am a Singaporean going to HK too. I will be there for 3 years and have been looking around to a place to stay.

Try this website: www.centanet.com.hk

they even have an interactive map where you can use to check out the place you want to stay.

With your budget and depending on the living standard which you are expecting, a good choice might be in the New Ter. or in some of the newer estates.

Lam Tin is in HK and with the MTR, you can get to Quarry Bay in 10 mins. So not a bad choice.

Well, the location of your place also depends on where you are working and where facilities you are looking for.

For me, it has to have a gym or a gym nearby and a MTR or KCR nearby. Thus Shatin and Tseun Wan are pretty convient areas in New Ter.

On Hk island side, I know rent in Causeway bay is cheaper than Mid level. Try sharing if you are going to stay at mid level.

the problem is there that are no proper gyms like fitness first in the suburban areas... argh... unless you find a place with a gym in it.

For me living in Singapore and Sydney made me accustomed to bigger living area. So I rather look for a place in the sub urban area and enjoy the scenary and the bigger space.

Some places in the outskirts have excellent hiking trails.

Hey been to a forum where someone is saying that he lives in Sai kung... It is a lovely place but i think it is really far from the city.

There are also considerations like hanging out with friends after work cos if you live far away, it might be difficult to hang out for after work drinks.

Like I said, too many considerations, which is why I am staying at a service apartment for one month while flat searching.

oh and gohome.com.hk do have good housing options and housing review where they review each estate.

so with a combination of both centanet and gohome, you should be able to figure out the place which you are staying.

another consideration is of course safety. I reckon Singapore is in a way safer than Hk depending on the area.

PS: if you have 6000 to spare then try whampoo gardens, for some reasons, my dad's friend keep recommending me to take that place cos of the security and living conditions.

I keep getting told about Lamma Island. Cheap, big spacious apartments, nice environment... It's very tempting. But ultimately, the ferry ride is putting me off. It sounds like it might be a pain in the arse to travel to Causeway Bay/Wanchai and go shopping or eating out, or make it hard for people to come over. But I am tempted...

In Causeway Bay right now, which is fine really. I think I could get a bigger place for the amount I'm spending though, so I might see about relocating if I'm here later. Quarry Bay/North Point seem tempting if I want to stay on Hong Kong island - not a massive benefit, but perhaps a slightly better place for the same money, and still not being too far from the local conveniences. My current place isn't too bad really - great location, nice enough apartment, ok size... it's just that the bedrooms are too small. I'd rather have one big kingsize bedroom than the two smaller ones I have right now. Plus, I'm not sure how much I need to be in Causeway Bay... and at night the noise of traffic and taxis can be a real pain - constantly beeping their horns and still hearing it this far up - gah! Double glazing... need.

Thumbs up

I have lived all over HK after finally settling down in Tsing Yi. My prime reason for this decision was the clean air out here. Most flats have a sea view & you dont have to pay thro' your nose for it
Its strange that when I lived in HK side I found this place to be a remote part of HK but after settling here the truth is it takes me lesser time to reach my office in HK (less than 15 min) by MTR using the Tung Chung line. If you are ready to shell out a bit more I believe you can board the airport express from Tsing Yi to HK. Moreover with a new station due to open on this line taking the KCR line will be pretty easy. Only is case you are the sort who hops from bar to bed then you should look elsewhere.

Lamma is 25 mins to town on the ferry, not long at all when you consider that you have plenty of space to sit, it doesn't come to a grinding stop every few minutes, you can eat, drink and smoke, and you are surrounded by friendly people who don't barge you. As for after work drinks- ferries run until 12.30 and we do have great pubs on Lamma. We sit on the island laughing at the people in Wanchai/SoHo/Lan Kwai Fong paying HK$50 for a pint when it is half that on Lamma. We also have 2 gyms, one of them a branch of Fighting Fit as the owner lives on the island and the other is a two floor affair with free weights, machines, beauty salon, massage, sauna etc. You can also cycle/jog/walk all around the island without having to cross roads, suck pollution and dodge the 'sidewinders' on the pavement.
The only downfall of Lamma is that the last ferry from the island is at 11.30 and to the island is 12.30. Also, if you don't like dogs, it takes a lot of getting used to as there are a lot of dog owners there, mostly from people coming over from Kowloon and Hong Kong side who dump them as their cute, fluffy puppies that they spent so much money on in the pet shop has become too big for their 4oosqft apartment shared with 6 people and it needs more excercise than 5 minutes on the sidewalk amongst traffic to take a shit once a day.
