with a population of more than 80k just in Whampoa Garden, it has pretty much everything you need from restaurants to groceries stores to medical centers.

its transportation network is quite acceptable during daytime
Bus : 8A 8P to TST, 115 to Central, 212 / 30 X to Mong Kok Area
MiniBus : 6, 6A to the KCR station
Ferry to Central and Wan Chai and North Point


however, after 11 pm, you are basically stuck with Taxi.
so for those who are night owls or work overtime til very late, living in Whampoa might not be a good idea

I would not commit to anything before you are actually here and can have a look. Different areas suit different people. I live in Tsing Yi - it's not an estate, it is an island between Lantau and Kowloon side of HK. There are many estates here. I found that I did not feel comfortable in older buildings and decided to pay a bit more and have a bit of peace&quiet as well. So, check into a hotel for a few weeks first, have a look around - even with an agent, you don't need to commit right away.
