Question A/V transmitters in the home

Have any of you bought these transmitter/receiver pairs from Ap Liu Street? They allow you to send audio video signals from, say, your NOW decoder across your flat to a second tv or your pc. I would be interested to know its range especially through solid walls and whether the units get too hot. Thanks

Hold on for ultra-wide-band devices .... they're almost here and will allow you to stream huge amounts of data between devices.

I had the chance to demo a wireless USB 2.0 device from Belkin a couple of days ago ... sexy stuff.

I know atleast two manufacturers are planning to use UWB to extend cable / settop functionality to HDTVs.

Yeah, I'm a bit of a gadget nut and will normally opt for the more difficult solution .. just because its cool.

By the way, any news on the NOW HDTV?

Still a little way off when last I spoke to Paul Berriman (PCCW Head of Strategic Market Development). They are still struggling with the quality of cabling to get 6MB more than about 1.5km from their exchange buildings - I know, because I am about 1.8km away from the switch even on Robinson. Getting 25MB/s (which is what they need for HDTV) to more than just the people who live next door to the exchange is proving tricky.

But they hope to be trialling within 2006 I believe.

Tempting but the Ap Liu St. units are $120 each. I don't see UWB units being that cheap this side of 2007.

Music transmission

I would like to transmit just music (streaming music from internet) to other rooms ... any ideas how to do it? I thought of an FM transmitter and actually bought a Belkin one, but the thing failed miserably to transmit beyond a few feet!!

I live in a high-rise building with solid walls, and a couple of wireless internet networks around - will they affect the transmission? Tks

Wireless B and G lans tend to operate in the 2.4GHz range. Wireless A runs in the 5GHz range if I remember correctly. The Belkin is probably in the same 2.4GHz range and shares this with DECT phones so yes it is a crowded band. An FM transmitter would have been better - if sufficiently amplified.
I notice that your friendly film developer Fotomax sells a pair of a/v senders/receivers for under $400.

DB,

I had a pair of similar devices in the UK - they send composite video and L/R stereo sound via a little, stand up antenna.

I don't remember them running that hot but I didn't feel comfortable leaving them on all the time and the transformers were like small bricks. My aim was to send audio from the AV system in our lounge to a small hifi in the kitchen. I tried the video briefly too but the quality was quite low - OK for a small 2nd TV perhaps. Sorry - I can't remember how much range/ walls affected things. I gave up in the end and trailed some additional speaker wires under the carpet and half way around the kitchen (nothing like a true lo-tech solution!).

Thanks PhilE. I suspected that the video quality might be poor due to the way they are displayed with a small b/w monitor.
