already spend 1 month time in hk interview graphic designer

hi all,

i already spend one month time in hk keep looking for jobs in jobsdb and recruitment.hk
more than 100 vacancies i was applied and only 4 companies i had interview before.

My conclusion is i found very competitive in this market.
Well, do i still need to wait another 1 month time for the surverying ?
or go back to singapore looking for jobs ?

(i am a malaysian who had experience working in singapore b4, currently rent a room in hk. in fact i think this a investment for me if i try still have chances but if you no try you have nothing to gain at all.)

i had been interviewed by one of the biggest company as senior graphic designer in TVB last 2 weeks and i was not selected at the end.

* Reason is because most company in hk would rather hired local people.
* secondly they have no experience in applying working permit for foreigners before. (singapore hired many malaysian because they are hard working)

unless if i found a design company that they are really like my port folio since i already have 5 years working experience. i speak fluent mandarin, cantonese also read and write. beside that i also can speak french and little german. Simple because i went to Paris in 1 month time last year.

So i need everyone give me some suggestions or what else i can do in hong kong or if still couldnt find a job,
* thinking of working as waiter when desperate '

from wery

hi!
unfortunately you have chosen a very quiet time of the year in terms of recruitment for your job hunting. your profile sounds good enough and the results are actually not bad.

market will pick up the next couple of weeks and especially after chinese new year when everybody resigns after getting their bonus

although I don't know your industry, don't despair and hang on until at least late march (if you can afford to wait).

hope this helps.

cheers

Wery.. I believe that selecting one place over other for good is surely one's own choice but isnt singapore a better place for IT and related jobs? From what i understand, HK is mainly consumer of IT and services and have very few development houses hence limited scope, whereas Singapore has sizable IT devlopment and companies as well, is it true?

nivantj,

yes, you are right. for example, HK consumers have many selection of the products so that's why there are a lot of advertising right here or you can even noticed the hk newspaper is all in full colour pages. whereas the newspaper in malaysia and singapore still in black & white pages.

1 month is not a long time to look for work. If you want to be a designer, you need to have MUCH more determination than that.

Good designers are rare in Asia outside of Tokyo.

Contact specific companies who's work you admire; places you're work fits in. Don't just respond to ads. The best companies often don't need to advertise, because people are always shopping there books around.
What area of design are you interested in? Send me your resume and pdf work samples/url. We are always looking for people who can think conceptually, and can work in a variety of mediums. If you have talent, sponsorship is not a big deal.
