Stones leave fans jumping as curtain falls on Fest drama
Harbour Fest lit up the Admiralty waterfront for the last time as the Rolling Stones last night brought to a close three weeks of drama both on and off the Tamar stage.
As the Stones' encore, Jumpin' Jack Flash, faded into the night, reflections on the event were already under way. Buoyed by a big final weekend of music, InvestHK boss Mike Rowse said those who questioned the bill - which could cost taxpayers $100 million - were missing the point. "The major product of the whole thing is the one-hour TV special," he said. Too little emphasis had been placed on the show, which would present a Sars-free city to millions worldwide. He said $100 million was value for money for global coverage.
"The Tourism Board is spending more than that on their latest advert with Jackie Chan ... people seem to get it all out of proportion."
Mr Rowse also said organisers AmCham cut a deal with the Stones that was $1.5 million better than private promoters could have achieved
