GSM Mobile Phone Purchase

Hi All,

I am visiting HK in 2 weeks, 30th B'Day present from my wife

I am looking at buying a new GSM mobile phone but wanted to know of any dangers buying from HK.

Will all the GSM mobile phones sold in HK work in Australia with a Telstra SIM?

Were is the best place to buy a mobile (is there a prefered market or do I need to look at retail?) I was trying to compare prices with AUS and looked at Fortress.com, they were cheaper than in Aus but can you get it cheaper from smaller retailers?

Also what about Blue tooth hedsets and accessories?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to finally seeing your part of the world

Cheers,
W00DY

Certainly the smaller retailers will be cheaper. On a par with Fortress are Broadway, Tai Lin and Chung Yuen. In fact you can find all four stores on the 7th and 8th floors of Times Square tower in Causeway Bay (on Hong Kong Island).
Small retailers can be found everywhere but the most are concentrated around Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po (each has an MTR station).
I have not come across any locked mobile phones here unlike the US and UK. I have been able to use 'foreign' sim cards in my HK-purchased mobiles during their first year of contract life.
Plenty of Bluetooth headsets here.

Thanks for the reply DiscoBay.

Mong Kok seems like the place to shop for photography gear as well.

Are you able to test the products before you buy in Mong Kok? or do you really need to know excactly what you are after before you go into the stores?

Also where is the best place to buy computer components? I am thinking about building a new PC so will buy all the parts in HK and then assemble at home. I have read about some computer markets or pockets of computer equipment stuff? is that the best place?

Cheers.

Don't forget to take your telstra sim with you when you buy the phone so you can put the sim in and test it works fine.

There a number of computer 'malls' here. Mong Kok has one on Nelson Street near the MTR station. Wanchai MTR station has the Wanchai computer centre above it. Golden Arcade computer centre is beside the Sham Shui Po MTR station. There is also Windsor House in Causeway Bay above HMV and opposite IKEA.
