| hmmmm....no!
Ha! (inside joke between me and Shri).
I ask: If we are to discuss entertainment options here, why is the heading "Work hard..."
But I'll venture out there a perspective:
The entertainment options I've enjoyed most have been those experiences that expose me to something new, something real and something distinctly Hong Kong. This involves drinking with the locals, playing dice games and throwing in a few songs over karaoke. This adds a whole new dimension to the typical sit-down bar drinking that dots the western social evening we may be more familiar with. The western socialising approach makes socialising very comfortable among people who are already familiar with each other - fine, but what if you're new? Seems to me the local chinese-infused socialising environment is more accepting of unfamiliar people and makes it more sociable and fun.
Easily said than done. The hardest step is finding someone reasonably bilingual, local sociable and with friends to invite you along. Ain't easy - but it ain't hard.
If you're looking for that, you ain't gonna find it in online Expat forums like this, or by frequenting Expat enclaves like Central, or by drinking in Expat seclusions like Lan Kwai Fong, or by working in Expat hubs like the European/North American companies. But that's my opinion thus.
I think it would be a shame to miss out on the Hong Kong experience when all one sees is the window-dressing - from the inside. I say get out there, immerse yourself. It takes work, but it's good play. It's rewarding. You'll have something rewarding to tell those back home.
And that, for me, is working hard and playing hard. |
