Yeah but to do that you've got to be a bit dumb don't you? try the same in HK (borrowing money to some triads members) and you will see how safe you are too.....

Desperate times call for desperate measures, If you need cash quick and can't ask relatives or borrow it from a bank, What other choice do you have?

The dodgy karaoke bars etc that are run by Triads are usually based in Mongkok and Wanchai, Its pretty obvious to most people which ones they are judging by the people that frequent them.

but if you borrow money from a loanshark, i'm guessing that your stupidness would be the same around the world... as would the consequences!

I already do... but here's just another reason... he he he...

Cerberus, i like your point about not stirring the locals up, i know it a generalisation, but i think you're spot on there dude.

HK is safe. just don't drive, ride a pushy or a motorbike, or cross the road

I seem to recall that poor guy was just a volunteer bartender that night, and a case of mistaken identity... they caught the women who called the hit, supposedly against a bouncer who pissed her off somehow.

cerberus is an unknown quantity at this point.
fwed, yes, experienced it firsthand. i don't know what it is, repression, bottled up anger, or just fear, but the style here in east asia seems different than back in the states. over there people'd give you dirty looks and right away go at it, plus usually (not always, usually) it's one on one. here it's strange, people will seem totally laid back until they decide to explode, then you'd need a machine gun to put them down. even after that, they'd see nothing dishonorable about getting ALL of their friends, cousins, neighbors, former classmates and knitting circle partners to come round and proceed to bash some poor schmuck over the head till he's unconscious.
of course you get losers calling reinforcements everywhere in this lame ass world, but out this way it's considered perfectly OK, not cowardly, and also happens more often than the other way.

but as for the original poster, this shouldn't be a a problem at all. just remember, if you don't look east asian you ARE a target in some way or form, simply because you attract attention, which can be positive of course but also hateful or at least resenting.

to make things simple tho, 1 to 10 with 10 being the safest, i'd give HK a 7 or 8. don't think there's anywhere deserving of a 10.

To sum up, HK is a safe city where you can walk around during the night, party or else. Just avoid any triad related activities and you should be just fine. Nothing to worry about.

Don't wear too little. Take away your expensive watch and diamond ring and gold chain, don't count money in open, then you're pretty safe.

Nuts with American accents

Actually I exaggerated. There was only one, and she lived in Tai Tam.
