HK is the safest city I have ever lived in (ok, being a guy helps but ALL of my female friends agree). having said that, being careful is a necessity everywhere (just in case murphy's law comes upon you

don't worry, you'll be fine and will have a great time here in HK!

HK is with Singapore and Macau probably among the 3 most safest cities in Asia. If you are coming from Europe/US it is really a big difference.

That said, of course crime exist everywhere and sometimes you have to pay attention, but believe me taking the MTR here is a pleasure while taking the subway in some area in Paris for example is really a difficult experience.

HK is easily the safest place i've lived in, and that is a few big cities. In my experience it's almost TOO tame in that respect.
Statistics say there's more chance of me getting a date with Britney Spears than there is of getting mugged in HK.
Though I heard in some of the local communities there can be trouble. Keep your nose clean and you are 1000000/1 to get any bother, bottom line.

Safest place in the World outside of Antartica

Where else in the world could you wander around at 3.00 am downtown and feel completely safe?

Pokfulam is a quite residential area (I live there) and of course walking around here at 3.00 might spook you - but it is still safe. There is the odd nut around (mostly spurned American wives), so .... as the other posters say, common sense precautions still prevail.

I'm not a bouncer but that would be a fun job, well, sort of.

A "problem" here in the bouncer scene seems to be a joy of carving--it seems knives are a weapon of choice with the kind of guys bouncers would deal with. Guns bring armed response, PTU, the whole shebang, but knives are just like "yea, whatever." Reminds me of that line from Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells

"Also, I think knives are a good idea. Big, f***-off shiny ones. Ones that look like they could skin a crocodile. Knives are good, because they don't make any noise, and the less noise they make, the more likely we are to use them. S*** 'em right up. Makes it look like we're serious. Guns for show, knives for a pro." - Soap

Macau same as HK and Sing?

I would not put Macau in the same category as HK. The first is more like Las Vegas - there is a lot of underworld activity going on out of sight. Try borrowing some money from loan sharks at the casino to see how safe you are.

Knives?

Not knives in the American sense - you mean meat cleavers.

Putting things in perspective

Meat cleavers are the favourite weapon of triad gansters - you are unlikely to come across them - these people frequent bars and karoke clubs that are generally out of bounds to expats or tourists, so you will not get caught in the cross fire (unlike in Toronto) - but even then, incidents are maybe just one or two a month for the whole of Hong Kong.

Expat bouncers are the only people likely to get in trouble actually - mostly because they are pig ignorant of local culture.
