So are you telling me that there is no good milk in HK ?
maybe it was rotten on day 1?

i tell you what, you must have good hospital cover if you're game enough to try 30 day old milk. either that or cast-iron guts

is a bit odd it didn't go off... even UHT and reconstituted stuff goes off once opened. so does carnation etc... ruddy good preservatives, i must say!

Just for the record dropdedfwed
My stomach runs faster than Tim Montgomery on steroids.

I suspect they added the milk to the preservative rather than the other way around.

Qte from the forum's in Dbfeamarket.

"I don't know if it goes bad or not, but I'd recommend the fresh milk by Trappist Dairy. It's cheaper than the two other leading brands in Hong Kong and tastes just as good, if not better"

end qte

I intend to try the trappist stuff next. Will keep you updated.

Dropdedfwed and anothernewbe,

Thank you very much. Your exchanges just kept me laughing and lightened up my day. Seriously, have any of you tried Mengniu's UHT milk from Mongolia? It's the favourite brand of most locals. I know it's incomparable to your standards but I've never tried milk bought in Australia so can't tell your standard. I'm just curious what you think about Mengniu.

Also, I remember once watching a programme on Hong Kong food and drink and it said that Hong Kong style milk tea should be drunk from a thick rimmed cup as it enhances the smoothness and taste of the tea.
Carnation is a brand of evaporated milk without sugar, condensed milk has lots of sugar. If you put condensed milk, then no need to put sugar. The thick rimmed cup is durable and less easy to break, rather than to do with the taste.

Thanks for the suggestion Valencia.

But no way am I going near Mongolian milk. It's probably Yak's milk pastuerised by boiling on ox night soil (dried off course to make suitable fuel)

oh, where's your sense of (mis)adventure? why not some high altitude earthy (organic?) yak squeezings to go with ur high altitude premium roast coffee?

valencia, i may just try it.. but in my upbringing UHT milk was reseved for camping, or was kept in the back of the cupboard for when the fresh milk ran out and no one could be bothered to go to the store (the closest store was over 25km away)

Mengniu's website: http://www.mengniuir.com/about3-1.htm. It's a dairy cow, not a yak.

Thumbs up

I read somewhere that they mix 3 different tea leaves, which i think ceylon and iron buddha being 2 of them and the don't forget to add carnation evaporated milk, about a third of the glass to get that really nice mucous like texture.
Try it and let me know.
