I am coming from a pretty generous and lucrative industry so my basic is alittle higher than my peers and a relatively fresh grad in singapore. What i quoted was with a help of a HK HR consultant.. i provided my current and he told me i shld add on a premium for relocation and factor in the diff in cost of living, thus arriving at the 32,000hkd figure. Honestly, i don't mind not getting a premium coz i am really looking forward to relocating. But i want to be able to enjoy about the same standard of living and the usual social activities without much worrying for money... |

I would think like u. but i think the HKers will want to kill us. have friends working like 10 years in other industry, came over and getting like monthly maybe 38k HKD that covers everything (i.e. no housing). Quite a large percentage of the local grads are getting much lower pay... So its your own decision. Anyway just tell them everything is flexible and grab the oppt. Have seen alot of fren's in your industry doing well after a few years. The money is there but you need the experience. |

First priority should be the job: interesting or not, challenging or not. Second priority: the package. 32.000 is a lot for some industries but is "normal" for some others (IB...) if you are interested, contact me for some mroe details. |

| for your perspective: local grads in HK get around 10,000 HKD (not in IB though!) so 32k are actually an outrageously good package for someone your age/experience (really 23 years old?). if you can get 30, take it and congrats! no hope for an expat package with extra rent on top. but you can get part of your salary marked as 'housing allowance' => is tax exempt or at least lower taxed (not sure which one but it definitely helps). interviewing: try to get other interviews asap, apply for jobs even if you are not interested and go to the interviews just for practice. good luck! |

but if they offer me 30 inclusive of housing allowance that is still reasonable? i checked the rates for rental in wanchai/central area and a decent place will cost easily up to 10k! That leaves me with no premium for relocation and no incentive to change my job. Abt local grads getting 10k... how are they gona survive when they have to pay rent too? |

| Two years ago, when HK was having SARS, the local grads got as low as $4000. Others got nothing and had to wait for 1yr+. The economy of HK is still recovering, slowly. Btw, most of the French people I've met are friendly and most willing to help. |

| Andante, Very few 23 year old local grads are renting a place of their own. 30% of salary is not at all unusual in many places in the world for a recent graduate to spend on accommodation - that's about what I spent in London many years ago (in fact rising over 40% at one point). It is clear to me after 7 years in HK that there really isn't a "rate for the job" here - essentially you get whatever you can persuade someone you are worth. When we put out job specs we get people applying with essentially the same qualifications/experience but huge ranges in salary expectation. (For example, recently a "market analyst / (low level) product manager" in the telecoms business, specifying a graduate with 3-5 years experience attracted responses from people looking for as low as HK$12K and as high as HK$40K - there was no way of linking what the CV said to what they were asking for.) |

| you dont need to live next door to work... try living out in NT where you can get a place as low as 5 or 6 depending on standards maybe lower...maybe higher |

But 30% of wage to go to rent is alittle high i feel. Probably coz sg has this Central Provident Fund that all income-earners have to contribute to.. Its a compulsary savings for all & that's 20% of our income. If i have to contribute 30% to rent, there's just gona behalf left! |
