Do u speak Cantonese? Otherwise hard to communicate with your Chinese patients. I know there are few native English speaking MD in HK governement hospitals, pretty nice and friendly, and speak a little Cantonese. Good luck in HK.

Over 98% of people in HK speak Cantonese so if you are not fluent in Cantonese, it can be a problem. Chances are that your license is recognized, meaning that you probably don't have to take an exam. You could open your own private practice office and build up your client base from scratch. Another way is to get a contract with the government hospital authority, depending on your connections and specilty, it may or may not be feasible.

Hi
This is not the advice I have had.
I am in HK with my partner whose job relocated from UK. UK-qualified doctors are no longer recognised (I was told this is a reciprocal thing in UK too - ie that Hong Kong qualifications do no longer get you a job automatically)
It is ok for those docs who were here before the regulations changed (?1992 or so)Now there is a licensing exam you may need to take and in order to get full registration yopu have to do a year in a government hospital (house job repeated) I have met UK docs who have found work in the University - some are teaching/researching but do not do any clinical work (no patient contact) some have 'linited registration' ie to cover the job theyve been given by the university. They could not then move to a private hospital, for instance. Was advised that the University may employ you if they have a job for you. I dont think private hospitals/GP surgeries are an option and certainly setting up your own practice requires FULL medical registration (which you cant get unless you do the exam/years house job) Was advised by a consultant that government hospital jobs are oversubscribed (there arent enough for local graduates)and Cantonese is nearly a must. There are privately run clinics but they requyire you to have your registration sorted.
Havent tested all this out but just passing on advice I received. Certainly not easy for overseas graduates(you are now an 'overseas' graduate as a UK graduate ) in Hong Kong, though possibly not impossible!
You can get further advice from the Hong Kong medical council.
In UK I found very few consultants knew about the regulations they assume its easy since Hong Kong used to be British,
Hope this helps best to research a bit more.
I think even Hong Kong nationality returning might have problems now (again used to be automatic registration)

no problem. I was told by a prominent GP that there is a dwindling number of expat doctors here, obviously as a result of the changes which make it very difficult to get work particularly as a senior who would find it very hard to go back to doing an intern year (and its not necessary) I was suprised to find that the overseas coordinator for the British Medical Association, didnt even know that they have a branch office in Hong Kong, when I enquired. Apparently there is no 'expat' psychiatrist and there is plenty of work in general practice but it is the legislation that prevents doctors doing it.
In contemplating a move to Hong Kong you must secure a job first and this would most likely be with the university so the more academic your cv the better. Good luck!

I'm just applying for med schools now and I was looking into whether I should apply to US schools or HK Schools.
I hear that trying to get licensed in HK is pretty hard nowadays if you didn't attend med school in HK. You have to take a very very difficult licensing exam in order to practice there. I think the passing rate was 10% in 2004. Check this site for more info:

there are stats under "tables"

there are also some threads on studentdoctor.net
here's one that might be useful:
