Hope this helps In answer to the questions written here, All detailed questions about eligibility to take the exam you should be able to answer by looking at the Hong Kong licensing Committe website they have a special section on the examination and what experience you need to take it. The people at the licensing commitee office speak english and you can put questions to them or email the office, though it may take a while for the reply. The best advice I can offer is what has already been written on here regarding the examination, its difficult but passable. Use of websites such as pastest and onexamination some people have found really useful as well. After you pass the HKMLE you need to complete a one year internship which will commence the January after you complete the exam, ie those that passed in Dec 2008 start in Jan 2009, however they are very flexible about deferring for 6 months to 1 year if this is not possible for you. Career paths in theory are the same for those who graduate here and abroad though if you are already experienced you may find they don't recognise your overseas experience here. How long does it take from a MO post to specialist training? Big question, didn't realise until I moved here how poor the career progression in the health authority is in Hong Kong. You specialise straight after intern to either ortho, paeds, anaes, ICU,surgery etc. These are competitive to get onto but there is in general a shortage of Drs in public hospital in hong Kong. You enter theses posts as MO. You should then progress to SMO and then Consultant however due to the small system many drs found themselves stuck at MO level even after full completion of specialist training ie becoming a consultant is very difficult. People can be MO for a long time. Hope it helps, good luck.

Hi everyone, This is a v useful website! I'm currently practising as an emergency medicine trainee in Australia. As the Aus College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM) accredits overseas training for a term i.e. 6 months, I would like to know if there is any short-term (e.g. 6-12 months) registrar or equivalent position available in an accredited ED centre in Hong Kong. If so, how do I go about organising it as it's not specified in the HKCEM website. As most of my family are in HK, I plan to work in HK on completion of training and becoming a FACEM. I gather that passing HKMLE is a must. But am I still required to do a year of internship on passing HKMLE, even having an overseas specialist qualification that is recognised by HKCEM? Cheers, Kris

Hi I am a doctor and I just finished my residency in US in June, came here in July and happened to be on time for the license exam in HK. I didn’t study for exam and didn’t hope to pass especially when I actually took it. So to my big surprise I passed it and now I have to make my mind if I want to apply for the second part of this exam. If anybody knows what kind of internship is in HK (working hours, call schedule) and is it possible to cut several months, I would be very thankful. If anyone has gone through this internship and doesn’t mind to answer couple of my questions, please write me on my e-mail(violetta_laskova@yahoo.com). Perhaps we can phone each other. I really don’t know if I want to do it, because US training was extremely hard and I still want some time to recover. Thanks a lot.

Not a doctor but there was an article in the local newspaper a few days ago that I read which said "junior doctors" worked really long hours - 36 hour shifts etc. I assume that would be you? Mind you, have seen plenty of similar articles in UK and Aus newspapers in the past.
