| the 5 years full time medical training shall include 12-month internship training here's a portion of the e-mail I receive from the Hongkong medical council: Thank you for your e-mail of 7 August 2007. Registration with the Medical Council of Hong Kong (the Council) is a prerequisite for practising medicine in Hong Kong. Persons who obtain their basic medical degree outside Hong Kong and wish to register with the Council are required to sit and pass the Council’s Licensing Examination, and thereafter undergo 12-month assessment in designated hospitals in Hong Kong as interns to enable them to be familiar with the local medical system and commonly found diseases. In general, a person may be eligible to sit the Council’s Licensing Examination if he/she satisfies the Council that : (i) at the time of application he/she has satisfactorily completed not less than 5 years full time medical training of a type approved by the Council and is the holder of a medical qualification acceptable to the Council; and (ii)he/she is of good character. For the purpose of (i), the 5 years full time medical training shall include 12-month internship training. The Licensing Examination is held annually, and the application for the Licensing Examination will be calling in April. Information of the Licensing Examination 2008 will be available at the homepage of the Medical Council of Hong Kong (www. mchk.org.hk) in March 2008. Below is a copy of the e-mail of a Doctor who took the HKMLE. "Hi, I passed the paper part of the HKMLE, but couldn't pass the clinical part. My case is a bit similar to your's in a sense that I took USMLE before taking HKMLE. I passed Step 1 and Step 2 and then I tried for the HKMLE. I took HKMLE just 2 weeks after Step 2 CK exam and I think this was the reason that I passed it. Regarding the difficulty level, I think it is comparable to USMLE. The problem with this exam is the negative marking. The clinical part of this exam, in my opinion, is a bit difficult. Unlike Step 2 CS, you have to check the real patients and elicite physical signs and give a diagnosis. Further more it is not a one day exam. You have to take Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics and OBS/GYNE separately on different days. Regards and Good luck! Note: The second e-mail is not my personal opinion, pls. verify the information regarding clinical part of the exam with Hongkong medical council. |

| Internship Quote:
Thank you for your email of 10.8.2007. A person may take the Licensing Examination if he/she completed a 4-year medical curriculum and took another year of internship/residency training. The Licensing Examination in Hong Kong consists of three parts : (1) Examination in Professional Knowledge, consisting of 240 multiple choice questions (2) Proficiency Test in Medical English. Exemptions can be given to candidates graduating from English-speaking countries upon application ; and (3) Clinical Examination. E-mail HK medical council, you can ask whatever questions you have to them. mc-dc@dh.gov.hk there's also another website that you might find helpful www.studentdoctor.net |

| internship Hi the only thing I can add to all this: if you are young just persevere and do it, if you are over 40, forget it and stay where you are The other solution is, go to Australia they are begging for doctors we do not have enough the exams are easy but the workload is very heavy at the moment _was when I left-. Good luck with whatever you decide! |

| I love Hongkong, but I have retired now. It would take too much of an effort to get registered, I am not young any more so I have no regrets. See which country suits you better, but Australia is a very easy country to live in, very accommodating and helpful. We have lost of "overseas" doc. working there. Cheers. |
