hi Danny
please see Eugene's post which is very comprehensive, about the written.
About the clinical exam, I have no direct experience but I've been told its a bit like finals - history taking/diagnosis etc Somebody I spoke to had to overcome a language barrier with the patient without an interpreter but managed to get the diagnosis. That was nice of the examiners! Her opinion was that they really don't want the expats in!

hi danny!

eugene's information is indeed comprehensive. i have talked with expat drs. who have taken the exam and they all said that it was tough. it is mostly clinical cases. some said that the usmle is even easier. so i guess it is really that tough. i intend to take it in sept 2007.

Thanks everyone for feeback and advice,

I actually went back to HK earlier last month and got the same information pack as well. I can speak fluent Cantonese and so communication is not a problem for me.

I wonder what is the best way to prepare for the part I exam. I have been studying hard and working at the same time but practice is important too. Do you guys think using USMLE MCQs is a good guide to practice from?

About clinical, it seems like assemble the style I had in my final year exams 2 years back and I can imagine it's not too difficult.

By the way, I am a 2nd year surgical resident in Melbourne, Australia. I am taking the exam because of family and personal reasons. What about you guys?? Anyone is going to take the exams in 2007 pls let me know.

Danny

I will go for it in 2007 unless my plans changed. I am a little further from finals than you (in my forties) so it won't be so easy for me!
Great that you can speak Cantonese. This will be a huge advantage when getting a job in government hospital afterwards. I think people have used other licensing exams textbooks, as otherwise you have no reference point and one cant learn all 5y of med school in one go. Knowing what is going to be asked (old papers) would be hugely helpful but I dont think theyre available.
Incidentally there is a website started by some HK docs on this subject, if you search. It was started as a reference point. There is a recommended texts section (I bough a lot of new textbooks from the list as mine were out-of-date anyway) but they are full textbooks eg Kumar and the thought of ploughing thru that doesnt appeal.

hey danny! what do u mean by "assemble the style?" For the written part I heard, you are given cases, and from there they can practically ask you anything about it. and it is right minus wrong type of test. so that makes it reeeeaaaaally tough. heard too that the choices look the same. so kinda confusing. better for us to prepare well then.

Thanks everyone,

Hey LA, do you mind share the website you are talking about please. Although reading textbooks are important, I think practicising MCQs and seeing more clinical cases would be more beneficial. What do you guys think?

I am trying to get a O&G and Paeds rotation in order to help for my revision. In the meantime, I am working and studying with friends about basics, med and surg.

Where are guys working at the moment?

Danny

Hi Chiuda
I looked for that website but not sure the address now - as soon as I find it (we changed computers) I will post it.
I'm not working (like some expat docs in Hong Kong) and working out my options.
Good luck finding an obstetric job
