hello eugene

good luck with your choice. Re licensing exam - I heard they just pass the top few percent ie it is not to say it is a difficult exam but pass rate is set low.
Someone told me an experienced French doc she knew got 70%+ but was not in the top 'x' number of people , so failed.(x being a small number of top scorers they let through) This doc ended up working as a counsellor instead, whilst in HK and returned to a senior position when she returned to France, apparently. If you are more junior you would most likely need to do a house job in a government hospital too to complete the requirements and Cantonese is needed (there are no interpreters as in UK!)

Hey LA,
I was wondering if you'd be able to give me some info on the pass rate of physiotherapy licensing exmas in HK...the info u put up about the "top few" passing in medical licensure exams is quite interesting ...Im an Indian physio with a post graduate degree from New Zealand and have been asked to give a licensing exam here in HK. I was denied any information about the statistics of the pass rate , no of students who give the exam each year etc....kind of left in the dark about my chances of making it here as a physio...Just wondering if u might know something abt the stats of the exam..or perhaps someone who has given the exam....It might lend some clarity to my situation in terms of my chances of passing or the amount of effort in need to put in!!! any information would be appreciated...thanx!!!

hi Visha

Sorry I dont have any info about physio exams.
I would suggest trying to contact some physiotherapists in Hong Kong to find out about the exam and decide whether to try for it. Especially if it is your only option, then best to sit the exam. Good luck.

I am a medical student currently studying in UK, and I want to go back to HK to work for family reasons. Is it really true that the licensing exams are hard to pass?

Does anyone even know why Hong Kong made such change? What's the reasoning behind it? Do they think they are superior to US/UK/Aus in health care provision? Surely there is a lack of good doctors in Hong Kong... isn't this just going to make their system even worse?

I'd bet there are some reciprocal reasons.... don't think medical associations are above politics just because they've taken the hypocritical oath..

It's to keep out the PRC doctors where the HK medical profession feels that the training is very patchy - the only way they could do it without a political problem was to set a reallly high bar, and not grandfather anyone from any country.

Hi

Regards the licensing exam - I would imagine if you have recently qualified then it would be easier (basic sciences and all the disciplines)
Questions are straight forward its just covering the subjects again (that you have not read for years) and revision. Many countries have a licensing exam (USA for instance) and don't accept a UK qualification.
The exam is also used for doctors from the mainland who wish to practice in HK. You can also apply to convert to Western medicine, I think, if you have Traditional Chinese medicine qualification (I was told they do anatomy/physiology/biochem etc but not nearly as much as Western medicine course) then obviously they do different clinical years, so the exam has to be thorough.
Affy dont be put off its no worse than finals (maybe easier I dont know its so long ago!)
Best of luck,LA

Re: HKMLE

Hi everyone,

I am Danny, just recently joined the forum.

I am a 2nd year surgical HMO working in Melbourne, Australia and am planning to take the licensing exams in 2007.

I just want to ask everyone, esp Louiseamanda, for the details of the exams. People said part I is similar to USMLE part I? What about clinical exams? I understood there are both short and long cases, what exact structures are they based on? What is the best way to prepare for the exams?

Sorry to have ask so many questions but I would appreciate for some advices.

Regards,
Danny
