UK related question Mobile or Cell?

Do people in the UK use the term "mobile phones" or "cell phones"?

I'm guessing "mobiles"......seen them being used predominantly there. "Cell phone" is an American term, and extension of 'cellular', perhaps?

Still mobile, although slowly getting americanised and some younger kids start talking cell now.

Think mobile term started when we could carry a 10 kilo brick around years ago which looked very impressive when you put it on the bar waiting for calls...

Mobile. Its a mobile phone, not a battery.

Chavs (aka Kevs, Chafs, Kappa Slappers, Townies, etc) in the UK are starting to adopt the term into their, er, 'language', as they seem to think its 'blingin'.

For more on Chav culture:

But normal people in the UK dont say 'cell' - apart from when refering to the place used to detain crimbo's

So, if someone was looking for a 300GBP "thingy" .. chances are they'd search for "mobile phone reviews" before they searched for "cell phone reviews".

Ahhhh, I see what your up to

Yep, so I guess one would type in either 'mobile reviews' or 'mobile phone reviews'. I think whether you add the 'phone' bit depends on your age group - i.e. mid-late 20's and under prob dont bother with it.

Incidently, not many people would want to spend £300 on a mobile as they are usually sooo heavily discounted (as part of contract packages). (Contract and Pay-As-You Go are also key search terms)

Hope this helps.

yep I agree - I have kept my contract in the UK so I can still get my yearly free phone, rather than spend a fortune on one over here

I wouldnt, Carphone Warehouse are not to be trusted!

Besides, there are a million phone stores on the highstreet, though its usually best to look at providers websites as not all handsets are compatible with all networks - or available on them....

If i was writing a review of phones for people in the UK i'd prob mention that...

A hardened Googler as yourself would know to reduce the search terms to the minimum that would guarantee hits without excluding possibles because of incorrect word usage. Alternatively, you could use the Boolean operator OR (or ,) with parentheses to include all variants of "cell" "mobile" "handheld" "pda" "smartphone" etc. Don't know how you intend to apply the numeric range of 300GBP though
