wow, this is surprising, as I was just told that the work visa regulations were drastically cut back. Honestly, just go on a 1-2 page self boasting tirade and they will approve you. List all skills- belching the alphabet, tying a cherry stem with your tongue, throwing a boomerang, whatever...

>> Is it applicant should enclose something like a cover letter when lodging the application for working visa? eg saying why the company can't hire the local for the position?

The employer should enclose a cover letter.. not a requirement, but as GWB said above, if the employer puts an extra word in, it does not hurt.

By the way, a critical issue is the salary... look for >$25K salary to get an approval.

Sum141 : give me private message, and I'll send you my immigration dossier so you can copy/paste few things or just compare it to yours.

Just want to share....

I have been working for two local companies ( big and very small company). The first two companies had to wait for more than 2 months to get a permission from the immd. But my last company only had to wait for 1 week. I didn't get a lot of money from all three companies and I am not a native, but I am on dependant visa.

I think the most important thing to get a smooth process in the immd is that your company who sponsor you has to know what to give and provide to the immid and has a very persuasive letter saying that you are the right candidate for the job.

Email the immigration department or look at their website. My gf did it a little while ago, but i cant remember what was involved. It was a pretty simple process though.

i've tried to contact the Aus Consulate in HK, but they said they dont apply holiday visa for me since i should have done it b4 i left Aus.
Now I'm finding some jobs offered by bigger companies, hopefully its easier to get visa. I am a marketing degree holder, with 2 years marketing experience in Aus though its of assistant roles. I believe I should hunt jobs in Australian companies, Agreed?

I disagree - there arn't as many Australian companies in HK than say American or British companies. Don't narrow your opportunities.

Hi Reni,
If you are here on dependent visa why do you still need to apply for a work visa?
you can work legally in hk with dependent visa, can't you?
