There is no ban on dogs as such. Each housing estate has its own rules. Most don't allow them, those that do have strict rules that they don't bark too loud to offend neighbours.
Only one or two breeds of dogs need to be muzzled when walked (I think).

agree with disco.

so long as your dog doesn't have pit bull or any other breed like that it in (i think they even frown if you say american staffy) you should be ok. they wont allow some breeds (so-called "dangerous breeds") to be imported, but most mixed breeds should be cool. there is no size restrictions, as far as i know. generally only breeds like greyhounds need to be muzzled in public. most places only aloow leash walking, no off leash. there are signs everywhere prohibiting all sorts of fun, so dont be put off. lots of people have dogs in HK, even big breeds.

you'll probably find it easier the get a place that allowed pets in discovery bay or new territories.

look through this thread (if you haven't already ) and find the gov't website link. that should fill you in a bit more. if you can't make any sense there, ring a local pet export company, they can tell you what can and can't be exported to HK - it's their job.

Thanks Disco & Dropdedfwed!

Your information is very helpful......my dog doesn't bark (hardly ever) so housing may not be too difficult. Although I would like to find something close to Quarry bay or Midlevel East. We've got about 2 months to look, so hopefully we'll be able to find something like that before we come back to US to get the dog & stuff.

Someone asked about furniture, renting versus buying. Is renting furniture very expensive? Or would it be better to buy a few things.

Thanks again for making the dog issue much clearer.
