great idea PDLM. obviously you've never had pets

I will be bringing my two small dogs (or as I like to call them, my fur kids) with me to Hong Kong for a 2 year assignment. I know that it is more complicated with pets but I don't want to leave them behind in the States. I would appreciate if anyone can share their experiences when it comes to housing (where to live and pets policy), travelling with pets into Hong Kong, and anything else (where to buy pets supplies and etc.).

I appreciate your help and look forward to the response.
use an agent to bring your pet over, make sure all the shots/paper work etc... are done, that's crucial.

Thanks for all the good tips and information. I am also bringing my 2 cats back to HK from US in March. . HK regulation is very strict on importing live animals, and I was so frustrated until I found this forum. Thanks again!

Export a Pet

Yes, sorry, i wrote the website down incorrectly. It is http://www.export-a-pet.com/. They were great.

llcnyca -- if you ahve specific questions related to getting settled in here, just PM me. I'm happy to answer anything. One thing... watch open doors/windows... pets do jump. One vet told me her dalmation jumped off their balcony because she was frightened of fireworks. We never open our balcony door or windows unless we've locked the cats in a room.

PDLM - gosh, why didn't I think of that?

HK does seem to have essentially that effect on a lot of expat marriages, yes. (Not sure it's worth the effort of trying to get any money back on ebay though.)

I brought my cat over from the States and I ended up using a transport service called WorldWide Pet Transport. I was very happy with their service and they pretty much took care of everything in the process other than bringing your pet to the vet for the necessary innoculations and health certificate.

For me using a transport service was a much better option since I didn't move my cat over until after I was settled in myself here. They arranged for pick up from her caretaker in the states, got her to the airport, onto her flight...and she was also picked up at the HK airport, cleared through customs and delivered straight to my home. I've heard that the requirements can be a pain, but if you have the time to arrange and deal with it, then you can save some money and can certainly get things done yourself.

I would recommend the service I used. Not sure if they have a website, cause they came as a recommendation. I'd be glad to provide a name and email if anyone is interested...just PM me.

Good Luck! And glad to hear you are bringing your pet over!!

i know i am being a stick in the mud, but really, if u follow some of the links in this thread, and also check your local government sites (try doing a google) you will answer these questions yourself. also, contact the companies as suggested in this thread - they know their job backwards, and they know exactly what to do.

anyway, from memory, u will not require any quarantine period coming to HK from US. general vaccinations are mandatory (eg what u vaccinate for in US) and sometimes other vaccines and blood tests will be done on arrival in HK. i posted a HK gov't link earlier on in the thread that details this better than my memory can

costs - generally about $1000US (if sending multiple pets becomes less per pet, ie about $1200 together for 2 pets) as a rough guide.

in regards to going back - this depends on your own government regulations, not HK gov't. the most strict quarantine i think is in Oz, and they will hold your pet for one month going BACK to Oz (it used to be 6 months).

once again, read the thread, and do a google.

Smile housing with your pet

Hi All,

I'm a little confused regarding size regulations on dogs. I've read so many things that say dogs are banned in Hong Kong. What are the regulations on walking them, and is it hard to find a place to live with a dog. Also, my dog is 50 lbs. (in US) medium size, breed is a mixed "?". Is there a size restrictions on living in HK. Everything else has been very helpful. Housing is the most important question. Anyone who can help, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Crazybee
