Yes, you can live quite comfortably in China with $6.5m HKD. But the downside is, you're living in China. China is still a third-world nation with an underdeveloped financial and legal infrastructure. Clearly, living in Hong Kong is more comfortable and inviting, especially for people accustomed to English and Western comforts.

Of course, this investment visa scheme is not for ordinary people. It's for those who readily has $800,000 USD to sink into real estate and looking for a comfy place to retire or live. And there are lots of them out there, especially in California with its real estate bubble!

Again (same as a the Macau remark), some ppl might like living in China.....HK is a fantastic city, no doubt about it, but china also offer some great places...

Do not always think that all ppl want to live in Uk/US/Canada/Europe or HK..some might prefer to live very well in Thailand for example (or in China) with 6.5m HKD than just buying a medium size flat in hK for that amount (even tough HK as a good financial infrastructure or good legal system...)
