hi, i am new to hk and am looking for a cheap mobile phone card. i would like to get a card with monthly payments but do not want to enter into any contracts because i do not know how long i will be staying.
i bought a $100 prepaid SmarTone card and have used it up in nearly 2 weeks!!

Unless you have a HKID, then it is probably in your best interest to stay with pre-paid cards.

Most of the companies charge a deposit of 3000+ HKD if you don't have a HKID card.

If you buy the larger SmartTone cards, then you get bonus minutes as well. I usually get the $300HKD ones and then get an extra $90 as a bonus. My calls are usually back to the States though, so I spend a lot on my phone that way.

even $100HK in 2 weeks is pretty cheap. In Oz for regular phone use (though very short calls etc cos of cost) I'd still easily rack up a $60-100AUD bill ($360-600HK) on a average month.

mobile fone calls are cheaper in HK than in most countries, even pre-paid.

but yes, going on a plan is cheaper, but as mr cheesy said, some want a sec deposit if no HK ID, especially if going to use IDD etc...

I would stay on the prepaid SIM, but use a calling card for your international calls. Many cards (e.g. the "Smart" card from IDT: http://www.idtasia.net/phonecards/ca...=3&vat=&name=a ) offer rates below HK$0.3/min to the US and UK. Plus whatever you pay for your local airtime.
