British community in HK

Hey everyone

im moving to HK in 2 weeks, im British and was wondering if there are still a lot of British people living in HK after the 97 handover? and if there is still a large British community in HK. I have lived in Tokyo for 4 years and made a lot of friends there like Aussies, Canadians, Japanese, Brazilian, American etc but there are not so many Brits in Tokyo as there Canadians, Americans and Aussis etc and i miss British culture sometimes, so im hoping in HK there will be a bigger Brit community.
BTW im not just wanting to make British friends, i hope to make friends with all nationalities, my fiance is HK Chinese and i hope to make some friends from Austrailia cos its always great to watch Rugby and Cricket with them, especially when its England vs Oz! also want to make some Portugese/Brazilian friends as im trying to learn portugese in my free time, i went to Macau before and had a great time with a bunch of Portugese guys 1 met there!!

sorry for rambling!!

As far as I can remember the largest expat population is Canadian, then American and then British. Obviously the filipino population is pretty substancial as well, but thats another story.

I think that the expat statistics are dominated by Hong Kongers who moved away and have now moved back with dual nationality from Canada etc.

There is a sizable British population here but as to whether thats because they didnt leave or not i do not know, but i doubt it, HK seems to have a pretty transient population. There are also loads of ozzies, who will no doubt pick up on this thread first thing in the morning...

Thanks for the reply

has the British population decreased a lot since 1997?

i heard that Canadians made up the biggest group, my fiances sister and brother in law and their kids all got Canadian citizenship prior to 97 and then moved make to HK, but to me they're not really Canadian!

I dont think it was ever that big, but i wasnt here then so....

Anyway, depending on what element of British Culture your missing you should be okay. There are 24h greasy spoons, pubs, pints and the odd pool table. There is also a place that does British Cuisine; pies, chips, mushy peas etc...

You can get the footy, but not if you get NowBroadband (opps!). Unfortunately, even after 100+ years of the British knocking about common courtesy doesnt seem to have caught on here, but then its pretty much no existant in the UK these days any way.

Other than that, its jolly good.
