Skype 2.0 with Video

Announced yesterday here

http://share.skype.com/blog/products...video_calling/

Now I'm thinking of getting a few webcams for our family back in the UK as Christmas presents, but does anyone have any recommendations of good, cheapish models (clearly you probably won't know yet how well they work with Skype 2.0 but thats another issue). I'm looking to spend no more than 500 HKD.

Also, does anyone know the policy on taking gifts back to the UK - is there a Customs limit on the total value of goods being imported, or just a limit on a per recipient basis?

I've seen webcams in Mongkok computer Centre for about $150 each. The quality is quite good. Probably nearly as good as Logitechs'.

Nothing innovative right? You could simply do the same with MSN Mesenger/Yahoo by hooking up a webcam?

ap999 - you're probably right but then my family don't use those apps and its been hard enough getting them to use Skype!

Time for a browse through the WCC I guess.

I use Skype for my calls while using YM for the Super Webcam!!! Those two combinations are great!

Prophetic comment there, Martyn...

Skype just announced a partnership with Logitech to market webcams...

Used it myself for the first time yesterday, and I was quite impressed with the quality, but I had a problem whereby after a random length of time (which ranged from a few seconds to 3.5 minutes the audio would just go to something like white noise (the video continued OK). It was continually necessary to disconnect and reconnect. Anyone else have this problem?

I'd say, stick to YM for SuperCam and Skype for the voice part... for now.

I've been using Yahoo IM for the last two years (video + audio) to do my videoconferencing with my collegues back in USA. No problems besides the occasional network glitches

Yep. I used YM before for voice too... until I heard Skype. The quality is unbelievable! It's almost like talking on a regular phone! Although I couldn't get the conference to work... it seems to reset every few minutes if more than 2 people are talking.
