That is so true. White headphones scream iPod. That is one of the reasons I got the black version. The second is that my player is black and I thought it would look weird.

I think that for the average person, an iPod is probably good. I'm just very picky about my hi-fi so I don't like them.

The money thing: Yes, they aren't that expensive, but they are expensive/trendy enough that having one attracts attention. Then it all comes down to what else you have/could have in the mind of a thief. At least that is how I picture it being if I were a thief. I would look for something I know and then start looking for other clues as to what they have. Their watch, the type of glasses/sunglasses they wear. I know that looks can be deceiving, but usually they are a fair indicator of status.

That is just what I would do to pick out my target. An iPod would say to me to look deeper, because this person has at least a couple hundred dollars to spare, what else do they have?

Like dropdedfwed - got a Sony Ericsson w800i with 2GB mem stick last month and haven't used my iPod since. OK its a lot more expensive (about 5000 HKD with the stick) but the sound is fine, the earbuds are great - and its a superb phone and decent 2MP camera too. With cheap GPRS here in HK, its a mobile email solution too. If Apple ever make a decent phone with similar features I would probably buy one, but they're not showing any signs of heading in that direction yet (I don't count the ROKR as its not an Apple product).

By the way, although slow in transfer speed, I've found dragging and dropping the artist named folders from iTunes file structure straight into the /MP3 folder on the Mem Stick works a breeze.

Having raved about the SE phones, my wife loves her 20GB iPod, I thought the mini was superb and am thinking of getting the wife a Nano for the gym and retiring the 20GB to become part of a bedroom stereo.

I personally can't see how you can get much more under-stated than an iPod in design terms and the risk of a mugging here in HK (at least on the island) is surely very low. However, I agree its more of an issue back in the UK and other cities:

luddite that I am

I got a Toplux 128mb a few years back and apart from the occassional software update have not tampered with it. It is enough for an audio book and a few songs and the mandatory 'Ocean waves against the shore' type mp3.

Then a few days back I came across the Sony Walkman phone the W900i. Holy Cow! a truly amazing piece of hardware; this is from someone who has never owned a cellphone or frankly given one a 2nd look. I am seriously thinking of adding it to my letter to Santa.

just a bit more one SE fones as MP3 players...

the W800 and the K750i are the same fone, in different clothes. they have different firmware, that is all (you can "convert" a K750i to a W800 apparently... the only plus being the "airplane" mode that the W800 has, ie it will work as MP3 player but fone feature disabled). the MP3 player was a complete suprise to me - i just wanted a cool fone upgrade. then i put some way cool sony headfones on it (the buds got my goat), and life's a breeze...

considering the cost of the fone is 3.5k, and a 2GB card is 1.1k (at golden comp centre, SSP) it not cheap, but as a jack of all trades, love it.

does anyone know where i can get a jogging strap thingo for these fones? like the arm band things they make for iPods? i NEED one

Wow - thanks for all help.
I went to 7th flr in Times Square today.
Fortress, Broadway, and others they DID NOT RATE THE NANO AT ALL!! - strange, when so many people have one. They were pushing more on Hyundai, Creative and Sansumg makes. The Samsung seemed like a good make with all the extras as mentioned on the earlier on the forum. I haven't bgt yet, so any feedback on Samsung would be cool.

Cheers

I have a T-Mobile MDA with a 1 gig MMC card. Cost me about $4400 total. Might have to pick me up a 2 gig SD soon...either that, or pick up an iPod. That 60 gig video ipod looks really sexy in black, I'm fighting the urge to buy it...
