Hugh, you mentioned 'other skills' - I'm a make-up artist here in London - anyone know of ways that I can pursue that? Maybe I could teach make-up in english!?!
You can do bridal make-up, highly on demand here.

Ignore hugh he's just a bit envious of the fact that we work half as many hours as he does but earn twice as much.

Best way to get clients is by word of mouth. When my friend and her sister got married 5 or 6 years ago, the make-up artist charged 1000 and 1100. He was a real pro, having a job with a theatre group. The job included doing a full make-up and setting the hair in the morning for about 1 hr and touching it up at night for another 20 min.

Hay Valencia,

Thanks so much for your advice. I guess all that kind of work is 'under the table'?

No, it's not under the table. If you're good, your customer will spread the word to her friends and other customers will be lining up for you, since your customer may have lots of friends and sisters going to get married, as in the case of my friend. She recommended her make-up artist to all her sisters and friends. We all used her, but unfortunately she messed it up, not showing up on the date of several of her appointments. We used another one and this one in turn had my friend's friends lining up for him.

This kind of jobs, like tutoring, is legal if you have a working visa or HK ID. However, you have to report your earnings to Inland Revenue.

You may now have to think about getting your first customer, such as by advertising in the supermarkets. You have to learn Cantonese, for sure. Good luck!

Well, I am coming with my husband, so it will be a dependent visa until I find a job, and i know it is impossible to work on that. I'm not sure if i can register 'make-up' artist as a business?

I am learning Cantonese now - it hurts!
