Tutoring English

Where can I get leads for English Tutoring clients/jobs? I am having a difficult time to get a regular job.. Maybe it's time for me to begin tutoring privately. Any leads to websites, phone numbers, companies, etc would be appreciated. Thanks.

I did an online one which is meant to take about 40 hours, I'll p.m you the link. Trinity does have a good reputation.
Positions can be at any level as a lot of the language centres will usually aim for kindergarten and upwards.

You're going to have to make your own leads dude as I'm just starting out too and theres no way anybody would be generous enough just to pass you all of there resource material, Start off by sticking ads in your local park n shop/wellcome advertising and take it from there, Thats all the tips I can really give you right now.

when i tutored fulltime, i put up a few ads in the supermarkets in the areas that i wanted to teach in...
from there it was all word-of-mouth...

it is really good money, but kepp in mind that depending on the income of your students, they could leave EVERY single holiday... that means no income for you... also, if you are sick, or they are... no income... if there is inclement weather, no income....

get my drift?

I understand totally Carang but this to me is just a short term thing, just doing it to get some money in the bank then setting up my own teacher/training company.

Hottie

You mentioned that you got a teaching qualification, this may actually help you find a regular job in mainstream school / international school if you want. I know they may employ part-time NET teachers sometimes. However, as you have some non-local qualification, you may need to consult the Teacher Registration Team (under EMB) for further steps needed. In this Way you may be able to get higher salary then!

Let me know if there's anything I can help!

Cheers, Blom

in fact i think you are all mostly wrong here.. $100 an hour isnt that low.. in the way i read the first post of this thread that was for a full time position, which entails approx 40 hour week, which totals to approx hk$18,000 a month, which isnt bad for a job which anyone can get for simply being able to speak english. Yes a TEFL will increase your chance of getting the job but i read the SCMP most days and see at least 10 ads aday looking for native english speakers.. if you look on wednesdays (classfied day) i see maybe 30!? As for private tutoring, yes you can get up to hk$300-400 an hour, but dont expect to get 40 hours a week of that.. and it is illegal, tho that doesnt stop anyone doing it at all.. I have lived in hong kong for 15 years i went to school here and alot of my school friends have come back to live in hong kong after graduating from university and are teaching english in HK. Some did a TEFL of some form and others didnt, personally i dont think it makes a single bit of difference.. Also i am no fan of teaching english and i discourage anyone from doing it unless they have absolutely no other skills/knowledge/qualifications to fall back on and are in deseperate need of cash. The reason i say this i have already hinted at above.. Anybody can do it.. and also.. your salary isnt going to get much higher than 20k a month.. unless yes, you setup your own tutoring business.. but that takes years (literally) to get the reputation (i.e students) to make it work..

Just my thoughts.. sorry if they seem a little extreme.. but suck it up cos its all true

Have to disagree with you on a lot of it, Theres always demand for TEFL teachers and yes theres a lot of people out there doing it, But even getting only 20 hours a week private tuition which isn't too difficult will earn you something in the region of $24k a month, Sure as hell beats working in a school and having the office politics to deal with I.E ESF.

Sure I have other skills to fall back on, But I'll be damned if I'm going to take a 40% pay cut to what I was on in London and also having to do 50 hour weeks for the 'priviledge' of going back into the corporate rat race, The only way I'd do that is if I was to get an offer I couldn't refuse and I won't hold my breath either waiting for that to happen.

Hugh, The reason why theres a lot of ads advertising for TEFL teachers is as you say its a short term thing for a lot of people therefore there will always be a high staff turnover and also certain language schools which shall remain nameless employ people on short term contracts and refuse to pay up. Its common knowledge within the TEFL community.

fall back on?? thats what i would call teaching english.. anyway, i will see you in 10 years time earning the same amount.. where as myself.. earning probably less than half you do right now will be earning quadrouple what you are.. not being arrogant at all or thinking only of the money (tho its obvious thats what you are more concerned about) but of a career! TEFL my ass, im really sorry but it takes no intelligence to do a tefl course whatsoever the one which takes 40 hours on the internet and you get 6 months to do it?? pssshh sounds like the driving theory test if you ask me...
