I don't think the UK gov gives passports to dependants.

http://www.ukpa.gov.uk/_6_eligibility/6_who_is.asp

Look at the bottom of that page for info on married women and residents.

Two separate questions here:

British passport - by marriage only after the married couple have lived in the UK for 3 years.

HK Immigration - a dependent visa which may or may not grant the right to work depending on whether the husband has Permanent Residency or simply temporary residency on, say, an Employment Visa.

Only your sister needs to live in the UK for 3 years.
The kind of British passport is of vital importance here.

Yes - you are right, although these things are always at the discretion of the Immigration people, and if you were married but living in different countries for that length of time I think they would probe quite hard to test that the marriage was genuine and not one of convenience.

As you say, I have assumed in all this that we are talking about a full British Citizen passport holder.

"Women who are not British and who marry a British man after 1 January 1949 do not automatically acquire British citizenship by virtue of that marriage. This applies regardless of whether she married a man who was a United Kingdom Citizen before 1 January 1983 or a man who is a British Citizen after 31 December 1982."

Seems a bit sexist no? So if the roles are reversed then the man could acquire citizenship by marriage?

Er, no. I don't know where you learned your logic, but you should get your money back.

As far as I know a man has never been able to acquire UK citizenship by marriage.

It was simple copy-and-paste the UK passport website posted by KIA. Just found it odd that they wrote that.

And for the record, it used to be that a child could only obtain citizenship if FATHER was british, but that changed to either spouse. So double standards can exist.

I am assuming you are talking about the British Passport for the British, not the HK BNO.

You will not be granted a UK passport automatically based on your marriage, - I don't exactly remember the whole procedure, somthing like you can apply for a visa to stay in the UK, after 1 year if your marrage is still vaild and remain in the UK then you can apply for ILR (Indefinite leave to remain which is PR), then after 2-3 years if you are still in the UK (dont remember) then you can apply for a UK passport.
