International Long Distance Calls Hi, I know there have been a few threads about this, but was wondering what the latest deals people are hearing about. I was using the promotional 1638 Smartone offer (calls to US are charged at HK$0.17/min), but that has expired. I called 0060 PCCW and their charges to the US are around HK$0.50 to HK$2.00, which is quite expensive. How can one find better long distance deals, or do we need to head to Mongkok for phone cards?? Thanks.

If you make a lot of calls to the US and China...I recommend any VOIP service. You pay under $20 US for unlimited calling to 30+ countries incl China and N America.

For this technical dunce here, can someone explain how to use VOIP if I am not logged on? I use a Mac laptop and it is not the easiest to use VOIP unless I have my iSight connected. The laptops dont have great built-in microphones. Thanks.

Forest, Why do you people simply fail to understand that skype-out is not particularly cheap. Its rate to the US is 1.7 Euro cents per minute. For 30 minutes that is 0.51 Euros. Moreover skype rounds calls up to the next minute so even if you hit voicemail and drop the call in 1 second you get billed for a minute. For as long as I can remember PCCW through its standard 0060 service, available from any fixed or mobile phone has offered me HK$0.17/min to any number in the USA. For a 30 minute call that would be Euro 0.56 at today's exchange rate. Personally I am very happy to pay a premium of less than 10% (and sometimes it is actually cheaper, depending on the HK$/Euro exchange rate) for the ability to make calls from a normal phone without all the hassle of making sure my PC is on, Skype is loaded, wearing a headset, and so on.

PDLM, How did you get those 0060 rates? I called PCCW and was quoted much higher rates even as a special "promotion". Can you let me know which plan you are under - they claim they didnt have such low rates and I just called them last night. Thanks. BTW - JaredHK - received your PM, thanks.
