Adventist and Canossa are pretty good as well for emergency services.

The best hospital around is Queen Marys - it is the teaching hospital attached to the university. But I'm not quite sure what you mean by "western" - I doubt you'll get a very good reception if you start trying to specify the colour of the doctor's skin or where he got his degree...

just use Cannosa in mid-levels. They have western doctors and cover multiple disciplines.

Oops.. didn't see this one earlier. For non emergencies, I'd recommend going to Cannosa (Old Peak Road) or the Adventist. For emergencies Queen Mary. Both the places have your regular "stuff them with anti-biotics" doctors that you'll find around HK. I'd recommend the Queen Mary for life threatening situations, their triage system makes sure you have to wait a few hours if its not a critical problem.

By the way, the Queen Mary is fairly overated as a "teaching hospital" .. you're only going to see a senior consultant after several weeks of waiting. Their normal staff, while competant, is err ... just competant and I'd not rank them as being the best in Hong Kong.

thanks... just back from day at the Matilda - where my father received excellent and super efficient care. Unfortunately he has to have a complex surgery tomorrow at the Sanitorium. Thank god for travel insurance! Thanks all BTW I don't mean to affend when saying 'western' - I meant western trained, as my father is very conservative kiwi and would be much happier/ calmer in that situation...

The Sanitorium is top notch. All the best to your dad. I don't think you offended anyone.

Based on my recommendation, my sister went to Matilda, which is a great place to give birth, for outpatient care. It turned out to be a complete disaster. The very nice doctor on duty (expat) had to refer frequently to a medical guide book -- apparently she was not familiar with the (pretty basic/common) problem. The next day my sister went to Sanitorium for the same problem and got the advice/prescriptions she needed from a local generalist for 1/3rd the price.
