Have heard the office politics in CX is very very bad, and actually overheard a conversation on the bus once, that a CX management trainee left CX after a year 'cos he couldn't stand the politics......

riyaaz will become famous soon enough
Really? I hope you don't put me off from applying. Actually I graduated from UK last year and I have always wanted to work for an airline but I did not apply to CX MT because I wanted to polish up my Mandarin skills.

riyaaz, DON'T let politics deter you if it's your dream to get into Air Transportation. Politics will understandably be found in ANY large corporation with limited room for promotion - it's reality and all a matter of how you'll handle it... it's just a function of the level of competition unfortunately.

come on, for all of us at work, who has ever made a comment :"there is simply no office politics at my work place"... 8-P

its just part and parcel of life...

and for ppl who cannot make it in the system, what's easier than to simply blow up the politics issue and say 'i did not like it so i left'...

as a MT, u are suppose to be a potential candidate to lead the company in years to come, and if u cannot take that heat for the first 2 years then MT is simply not the path by all means

Unhappy

hello everyone... it's my first post here! glad to find this forum!!

anyway, i got this email from CX on june 3 and was told that i get an interview opportunality this coming week... and if i pass the first round... there will be another interview in teh week of 19th....

emmm... i emailed her back and said i am currently working in toronto and i just can't take 2-3 weeks off(actually i just went to hk in april for 2 weeks for vacation)... and since the interview is in hk.... i think i lose my chance!!!

argh... i can't believe i am letting this opportunailty to slip away from me... on teh other hand, i was thinking why would they think overseas applicant can make themselves availabe any time? i mean, if u tell me in advance... i might of able to take some days off... such a short notice....

anyone faced this probelm before?!~?!

eureka2006, I so know what you mean!

I just got an email 2 weeks ago saying basically the same thing. I've been struggling with the decision as well - I mean it's CATHAY for god's sake... So cool to travel around Asia as an MT working in different countries and getting that 80~90% discount for tix.

I asked them about interviews in N. America but they said you have to come back to HK - understandably I guess but....

Not that I'm not happy for the chance but they said on the application form that we should be contacted within 8 weeks of the deadline back in December and that if you're not contacted you should consider yourself rejected.....

Edited to say: maybe if you ask them for acceptance into next year's intake if you can't make it this year? It's a long shot though....

hi icer28,
ya... for sure i will ask the lady who emailed me to put me on next year's list!! and i think i will ask her to email me in ADVANCE so that i can at least talk to my manager about it...
and actually... they have several interviews, so with my 3 weeks vacation, that might not be enough! arrrrrrr...
ya.. i know cathay is such a good company... actually.. do u know what's the ratio percentage of getting a chance for the interview? i felt very lucky when i receiveed the invitation email!
btw.. where are u from icer28?

I did ask my friend who went through their interview process - unsuccessfully though - and he said that they normally interview around 4~5000 people and hire around 4~5 each year. So it's around one in a thousand. Those odds aren't bad for MT tho - esp. for big companies.

Like the people above said, BE SURE you're up to date on your current events (both international and HK) and what Cathay's current challenges are - SWOT and Porter's forces etc... I also hear they have a kind of Toastmasters thing where they give you a topic and expect you to give a short speech on it. Good Luck if you decide to go for it. Best be prepared and treat it seriously right?

I'm fm Vancouver by the way and Good Luck!!

hey icer28:
????!?!? what do u mean? they interviewed 4000-5000 candidate for the MT and only select 4-5 ppl???? you must be kidding!!! if that's the case, then the chance of getting it is even worst than winning the lottery!!
wowow... that's insane!
