If you can't see that the management of an airline business is inherently linked to politics then I feel it might not be the best career for you...

And moreover, the requirements for the Management Trainee programme are clearly stated on Cathay Pacific's website - including the desireability of Mandarin. If you haven't done even that much research then, again, I feel you may be wasting both your time and theirs.

riyaaz will become famous soon enough
I have a great passion for airlines, I was only asking interview techniques and for your information I have done all my research. I was only asking those people who have gone through the interview process and what it was like.

18000? for MT

Hi everyone,

I'm currently living in Vancouver and I just got an interview offer from Cathay. I've asked some friends and family and they keep on quoting a monthly salary for their MT program of around HKD 10,000 - with rent and transportation in HK being so high I don't think that can cover all my living costs.

Can anyone source yoyoho's HKD 18000 comment? It would be really helpful to making my decision! Thank you in advance!

Well a graduate starting salary at a big 4 is around the $11,000 mark so that's a starting point. As I understand the MT programmes at the likes of CX require graduates with a few years of experience under their belt. Presumably then a salary of $20/25,000 wouldn't be unreasonable. Just my speculation though I wouldn't really have a clue.

And for those accepted into the program I doubt they would offer vastly different salaries to people with different experiences. I guess it'd be roughly the same across the board.

As far as I know, the CX MT programme doesn't require any work experience, in fact they only want people with 0-max 3 years work experience.

I know swire pays their managment trainee HK$14K/m - this is already an expat package! they do provide you a place to live though, so no worry about housing. Guess cx might be around the same level, if not a little more.

But the again, if you are a local, most likely your pay will be slightly less.

I saw the job advertisement of Cathay Pacific for MT program 06/07 in a website, which provide jobs for local university student last year. As I remember, the starting salary is HKD18,000 per month and prefer not more than 3 years working experience.
However the deadline for MT program 06/07 was December 2005. In fact, the first interview was started on Feburary 2006.
Hope this information can help you.

Thanks again for the info Yoyoho.

Yes I do know that the first interviews for local HK, US and UK residents were back in February, the fact they contacted me this late for my first interview was kind of annoying because I have already made small inroads in Vancouver (although Cathay is still my first choice as an employer) and now I have a tough decision deciding whether I want to risk the small start I've made to take the interview - with no guarantee that I'll get the post....
